Two people were recently injured, one seriously, in a multi-vehicle crash on the
Southern State Parkway in Lakeview, New York. According to a Newsday.com report, officials said the crash involved a tractor-trailer that struck an overpass early morning on Dec. 14. Both the injured victims were occupants of a car that collided with the tractor-trailer, police said.
The driver of the tractor-trailer, identified as Jose De La Rosa-Martinez, 39, of the Bronx, fled the scene of the truck accident in the tractor cab following the crash, but later surrendered to the authorities at the state police barracks in East Meadow. He was charged with second-degree reckless endangerment and leaving the scene of a personal injury accident.
Serious Injuries Reported
Officials said De La Rosa-Martinez was driving a 2009 Freightliner truck westbound on the Southern State when it struck the overpass at Eagle Avenue-Hempstead Lake State Park. Police said after the truck hit the overpass, a westbound Acura sedan collided with the back of the tractor-trailer. The driver of the car, identified by police as 53-year-old Kereen Wiggins, suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries. She was transported to a Manhattan hospital.
A passenger in the Acura was also transported to an area hospital for treatment of unknown injuries. Investigators from the state police Bureau of Criminal Investigation, Collision Reconstruction Unit, Forensic Identification Unit and Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit all responded to the scene to investigate. Our thoughts and prayers are with both the injured victims of this truck accident.
Compensation for Injuries and Damages
Accidents caused by trucks often result in catastrophic or major injuries such as traumatic brain injury, spinal cord trauma, internal organ damage, multiple broken bones, amputations, etc. Such injuries can require significant medical treatment and rehabilitation and leave individuals with temporary or permanent disabilities that prevent them from working and earning an income.
Victims who have been injured in truck accidents may be able to seek compensation for damages including, but not limited to, medical expenses, lost income and benefits, hospitalization, rehabilitation, permanent injuries, disabilities, past and future pain and suffering, etc. Families of deceased accident victims may be able to file a wrongful death lawsuit seeking compensation for damages such as lost future income, funeral costs, medical expenses, pain and suffering, etc.
