A leaky tractor-trailer caused a 23-vehicle accident on the I-95 in Westchester County early morning on Oct. 26 injuring at least seven people and causing a massive traffic backlog at the height of the morning rush. According to an NBC New York news report, New York State Police said troopers responded to several reports of multi-vehicle crashes on the I-95 north in New Rochelle.
Slick Roadway Caused Multiple Crashes
When they arrived at the scene, they saw 21 passenger cars and two tractor-
trailers were involved in a series of car accidents that stretched over a mile of the highway. They determined that one tractor-trailer had leaked 100 gallons of its load. It is not clear what type of liquid was in the tractor-trailer. However, New York State Police said the substance spilled onto the roadway causing extremely slippery conditions.
Seven people were transported to area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries. The Thruway was shut down in the area to facilitate cleanup efforts. The nature and extent of the injuries sustained by victims is not known. We wish everyone affected the very best for a speedy and complete recovery.
Dangers of an Unsecured Load
Truck companies, truck owners and operators have a responsibility to ensure that the loads being hauled by their trucks are properly secured. The driver, trucking company, corporation or another party that has been contracted to load the truck, etc. all have a legal obligation to make sure the truck is properly inspected and that the load is secured. When trucks spill their roads on a highway, there is significant danger of crashes that involve major injuries or even fatalities.
Here are some of the negligent (careless) or reckless actions involving commercial vehicles that can lead to its cargo and contents falling onto New York’s roadways:
• Loads that are not properly covered or secured
• Trucks travelling at an excessive rate of speed, or unsafe rate of speed
• Taking a turn too hard or too fast
• Defective materials used to secure cargo
• Using an improper vehicle to transport the type of cargo
• Driving under the influence
• Driving while fatigued or sleepy
There are both state and federal regulations that govern the operation of commercial trucks. When these truck accidents occur and result in serious personal injuries or fatalities, it would be in the best interests of victims and their families to safeguard their rights and contact an experienced New York truck accident lawyer for a free consultation. Truck accident cases can be rather complex and challenging given that they often involve multiple parties who may be liable. When trucks are involved in highway pileups or multi-vehicle accidents, getting an attorney promptly on your side is even more important because the complexity of these cases is even greater with many different parties involved.
