New Study Ranks Deadliest City for Pedestrians

A recent study conducted by Jerry Insurance Agency ranks New York City as the deadliest city for pedestrians in the United States. New York ranked the highest among U.S. cities with 1,260 pedestrian deaths between 2011 and 2020 followed by Los Angeles (1,133 deaths), Phoenix (717 deaths) and Houston (647 deaths). For the study, the insurer analyzed fatal crash data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to determine trends across the country.

What the Study Reveals

Reacting to the study, a spokesman for the New York City Department of Transportation told PIX11 that the city is “one of the safest cities for pedestrians per capita.” While this may be true, statistics show that pedestrian deaths here are rising at twice the rate as overall traffic fatalities across the nation and the surge in citywide pedestrian accident fatalities is now at a four-decade high.

Safety experts and advocates attribute this spike in pedestrian fatalities to an increase in speeding, aggressive driving and overall traffic fatalities since the outbreak of COVID-19, and attributed that behavior on the mental stress of navigating the global pandemic. The study from Jerry Insurance Agency also found that four out of every five pedestrian deaths occur in an urban area.

The study points out that most U.S. roads are unfriendly to pedestrians making streets even deadlier. There are far too few sidewalks and pedestrian crossings, and too many high-speed, high-traffic-volume roadways cutting through densely populated urban areas increasing the likelihood of pedestrian accidents that can result in serious injuries or fatalities, the study states.

Recklessness and Negligence (Carelessness)

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) statistics show that traffic accident fatalities in the United States surged to a 16-year high in 2021 as more drivers returned to the road after a drop off in driving at the start of the coronavirus pandemic. Nearly 43,000 people died in car accidents in 2021, which was an 11% increase over the prior year and the highest number of traffic deaths since 2005. This 11% year-over-year increase is also the largest percentage rise ever recorded by NHTSA.

These statistics show that injuries and fatalities due to car accidents are surging as more drivers continue to operate recklessly and without regard for public safety. If you have been injured in a car accident, you will have to prove that the other party was negligent (careless) at the time of the incident leading to your injury. An experienced New York car accident lawyer can collect crucial evidence that strengthens your case as well as help secure maximum monetary compensation for your losses.

Compensation for Victims

Injured victims of pedestrian accidents and bicycle accidents can seek compensation from at-fault parties for damages including, but not limited to, medical expenses, lost wages and benefits, hospitalization, rehabilitation, permanent injuries, disabilities, past and future pain and suffering, etc. Families that have lost loved ones in pedestrian accidents can seek compensation for damages such as lost future income, medical and funeral costs, pain and suffering, etc.

Pedestrian accident victims and their families should also remember that they can seek compensation for injuries or losses in collisions even if the victim was not walking in a marked crosswalk and even if the driver involved in collision was not charged. Our law firm recovered the full one million dollar insurance policy for a girl who was not in the crosswalk when a motor vehicle hit her.
