Several people were injured in two separate pedestrian accidents in Queens on April 3. According to CBS News, while no one was fatally injured, several people were taken to area hospitals to be treated for a variety of injuries. The first incident, according to CBS News, occurred at the corner of 37th Street and 35th Avenue in Astoria at about 5:30 p.m. Police say a 35-year-old woman driving a Nissan Versa lost control of her vehicle and went onto the sidewalk, running over two girls, ages 7 and 14. A 58-year-old man was also struck.
Multiple Injuries Reported
Investigators said the 7-year-old girl was rushed to a local hospital to be treated for a broken femur and a head injury while the 14-year-old girl and the man both suffered leg injuries. Police say the driver was arrested and later charged with reckless driving and operating a motor vehicle without a license. Investigators are trying to determine how and why the woman lost control of the vehicle.
The second incident occurred just after 7 p.m. at Lefferts Avenue and Liberty Boulevard in South Ozone Park. Police said a 79-year-old woman was making a left turn on Liberty when she swerved to avoid an oncoming vehicle and sideswiped a parked city bus. The driver then jumped the curb and struck four women who were standing at a bus shelter, police said. The pedestrians, who were between the ages of 18 and 70, were taken to a local hospital. The driver and two passengers as well as two other bus passengers were also transported to a hospital. None of the injuries are believed to be life threatening. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone who was affected by these pedestrian accidents.
Types of Pedestrian Accident Injuries
Pedestrian accidents can lead to a wide range of injuries depending on factors like vehicle speed, point of impact and the pedestrian’s age and health. One of the most common injuries is fractures, especially to the legs, arms, ribs, and pelvis, due to the force of the collision. Head injuries are also frequent and particularly dangerous — ranging from concussions to traumatic brain injuries — which can cause long-term cognitive and physical impairments.
Spinal cord injuries can occur when a pedestrian is thrown or dragged, potentially leading to partial or full paralysis. Soft tissue injuries such as lacerations, bruises, and internal bleeding are also common and can vary in severity. Some injuries such as internal organ damage may not be immediately visible. However, it can be life-threatening if not diagnosed promptly.
Children and elderly pedestrians are especially vulnerable, often suffering more serious harm due to their physical fragility. In severe cases, injuries may lead to permanent disability or death. Prompt medical attention, accurate diagnosis and long-term rehabilitation are critical for recovery and for improving a victim’s quality of life after a pedestrian accident.
