An MTA bus ran over an elderly man who was crossing a Brooklyn street in a crosswalk the evening of June 2 leaving him critically injured. According to a report in the New York Post, the 87-year-old pedestrian was approaching the middle of the crosswalk on East 12th Street in Sheepshead Bay when a B36 bus making a left turn from Avenue Z, collided with the pedestrian. The victim was pinned under the bus, officials said. A witness reportedly told a local Brooklyn news outlet that the bus driver “was not looking” when the pedestrian accident occurred, and that the victim appeared to have the right of way.
Ongoing Investigation
Paramedics rushed the elderly victim to a local hospital with trauma to his body. He was listed in critical condition. The bus driver remained at the scene and waited to talk with officers from the Highway Collision Investigation Squad, police said. A spokesman for the MTA said it is not clear how long the bus driver had been with the agency.
The driver was also taken to a local hospital to be treated for emotional trauma after hitting the victim, the Post reports. Also, as part of MTA protocols, the driver was administered drug and alcohol tests, the article said. The investigation is ongoing. Our thoughts and prayers are with the injured victim. We wish him the very best for a speedy and complete recovery.
Dangers Faced by Elderly Pedestrians in NYC
Elderly pedestrians in New York City face disproportionately severe risks compared to other age groups, stemming from increased vulnerability, slower mobility and dangerous street conditions. The city’s website shows that adults aged 65 and older make up roughly 15% of New York City’s population, but account for over 45% of all pedestrian fatalities. City statistics also show that left-turn failures cause about 35% of older adult pedestrian deaths, which is twice as deadly compared to younger victims.
Senior citizens are more vulnerable to injuries in pedestrian accidents due to a combination of factors. As people age, their bones become more brittle, leaving them vulnerable to severe or fatal injuries even if the vehicle strikes them at lower speeds. Seniors might also take longer to cross the street, which leaves them exposed to traffic for longer periods of time, particularly at busy intersections. When a crash does occur, elderly pedestrians are far more likely to sustain life-threatening or debilitating injuries due to their frailty.
