A 57-year-old man was killed in a bicycle accident after being struck by an MTA bus in the Bronx. According to a report in the New York Daily News, the victim was on an e-bike heading east on East 149th Street near Brook Avenue in Mott Haven the night of Feb. 25 when a left-turning MTA bus struck the man. The bicyclist was pronounced dead at the scene and his name was not immediately released. The bus driver remained at the scene and no charges were immediately filed pending the ongoing investigation. The bus was not carrying any passengers at the time. We offer our deepest condolences to the family members of this bicycle accident victim.
This crash happened a block away from where 26-year-old Jose Angel Victoriano was killed while riding a bicycle in 2022, bicycling advocates said. They pointed to a lack of protected east-west bike lanes in the South Bronx, which makes biking through the borough extremely dangerous for bicyclists. “Ghost bikes” or memorials for bicyclists who have died in accidents can be found all along the roadway. Advocates say they have installed a dozen ghost bikes on a one-mile stretch of that roadway alone. Safety advocates with Transportation Alternatives are calling for more to be done in the Bronx to protect bicyclists.
Why Bus Versus Bicycle Collisions Are Dangerous
Bus versus bicycle collisions lead to serious injuries and fatalities due to the significant size and weight difference between the two vehicles. Buses, which can weigh tens of thousands of pounds, generate considerable force upon impact, while bicycles provide little protection to riders. As a result, cyclists involved in collisions with buses often suffer severe injuries, including traumatic brain injuries (TBIs), spinal cord damage, broken bones and internal organ trauma.
One of the main causes of such catastrophic collisions is driver negligence (carelessness), which may involve driver distraction, impaired driving or a failure to yield the right of way to pedestrians or bicyclists. Additionally, urban environments with frequent stops, narrow lanes, and heavy traffic increase the likelihood of conflicts between buses and bicycles. Speed and impact location also play crucial roles in injury severity. A collision at high speeds or involving the front or rear wheels of a bus can be catastrophic. Even at lower speeds, a bicyclist may be thrown onto the pavement or under the vehicle, leading to life-threatening injuries.
Injured victims of bicycle or pedestrian accidents involving may seek compensation from the bus company and/or other responsible parties for damages including medical expenses, lost wages and benefits, hospitalization, rehabilitation, permanent injuries, disabilities, past and future pain and suffering, etc. Families that have lost loved ones can seek compensation for damages as well by filing a wrongful death claim.
