Common Causes of Collisions Involving Mopeds
Street intersection collisions tend be caused by various factors including, driver inattention, poor visibility, or failure to yield the right of way, etc. One of the most common causes is that larger vehicles fail to see mopeds, especially when making left turns. Due to their smaller size, mopeds can easily be hidden in a car’s blind spot or behind other vehicles. This leads to situations where drivers unintentionally cut off or turn into the path of a moped.
Another frequent cause is driver distraction. Using mobile phones, adjusting the radio, or simply not scanning the intersection carefully can result in a collision. Additionally, many drivers underestimate the speed at which a moped is traveling and make unsafe turns or lane changes.
Failure to obey traffic signals or signs, such as running red lights or stop signs, is also a key factor in such incidents. This is especially dangerous at busy intersections where multiple lanes and turn signals are involved. Road conditions, poor lighting and lack of proper signaling from drivers further contribute to accidents.
Injuries Suffered in Moped Accidents
Moped accidents can result in a wide range of injuries, many of which are serious due to the rider’s lack of protection. Head injuries are among the most common and dangerous. These can range from concussions to traumatic brain injuries. Road rash is another frequent injury, caused by the rider sliding across the pavement, which can lead to severe skin damage and infection.
Broken bones are also common, particularly in the arms, legs, and ribs, as riders are often thrown from the moped during a collision. Spinal cord injuries may occur in more severe crashes, potentially leading to partial or full paralysis. Internal injuries, such as organ damage or internal bleeding, can also result from high-impact crashes. Even at lower speeds, moped accidents can cause lasting physical and emotional trauma.
