Mayor Eric Adams has made a pledge to redesign 1,000 street intersections across the city and make them safer for pedestrians, and to vigorously enforce safety laws by having the NYPD crack down on drivers and bicyclists who fail to yield to pedestrians in a crosswalk or intersection, and/or fail to stop at red lights and stop signs.
According to a news release issued by the mayor’s office, NYPD will begin “expanded enforcement against drivers who fail to recognize the primacy of pedestrians in crosswalks.” Officials also announced a new education campaign to make sure motorists in the city know and understand the rules of the road.
Focus on Pedestrian Safety
The Adams administration’s focus on pedestrian safety comes days after a school
bus struck and killed a 15-year-old girl who was crossing an intersection with the green light. That bus driver was arrested and charged with failure to yield to a pedestrian and failure to use due care. The city noted that nearly half of all traffic fatalities in all five boroughs occur at street intersections.
Last year, New York City saw the highest number of traffic fatalities since 2013, when 279 people were killed by vehicles. Mayor Adams also announced he will install 100 raised pedestrian crossings to make them more visible to drivers and to slow motorists down. He has also vowed to put 100 bike corrals at intersections and to remove parking spaces where large vehicles can make it difficult for pedestrians to see oncoming traffic and for vehicles to see pedestrians and pedestrian crossings.
The city plans to improve 1,000 intersections just in 2022, officials said. Mayor Adams has promised to double down on enforcement for drivers and cyclists who don’t obey the rules of the road and yield to pedestrians at intersections and crosswalks. Mayor Bill de Blasio who launched the Vision Zero initiative completed 811 street design changes during his eight years as mayor. Adams has promised “a new approach” to Vision Zero with more street design changes and enforcement.
Pedestrian Fatalities Caused by Negligent (Careless) Drivers
Over the last two years, we’ve seen a significant increase in the number of pedestrian accidents caused by speeding and negligent (careless) drivers. A number of street intersections in the city have become deadly due to driver inattention and poor design. As New York personal injury lawyers who represent injured pedestrians as well as families of pedestrian accident victims, we hope these planned street improvements and heightened enforcement at street intersections will curb these very avoidable collisions.
Victims of pedestrian accidents can seek compensation for damages including, but not limited to, medical expenses, lost income and benefits, cost of hospitalization, rehabilitation, permanent injuries, disabilities, past and future pain and suffering, etc. Families that have lost loved ones may also be able to file a wrongful death lawsuit seeking compensation for their losses.
