An 86-year-old woman suffered critical head injuries in a pedestrian accident after she was struck by an electric scooter in Manhattan. According to an NBC New York news report, the major injury collision occurred the evening of April 1 at the intersection of East 104 Street and Third Avenue. When police arrived at the scene, they found the woman lying on the ground with head trauma.
Ongoing Investigation
A preliminary investigation determined that a 35-year-old woman who was
operating a stand-up electric scooter struck the pedestrian as she was walking southbound on Third Avenue and attempting to cross East 104 Street. Emergency medical personnel responded and took the victim to an area hospital in critical condition with head trauma.
Because of the severity of the injury, she was later transported to another hospital for further treatment, officials said. The 35-year-old e-scooter operator remained at the scene and no arrests or summonses have been issued at this time. Our thoughts and prayers are with the elderly pedestrian who has suffered critical injuries in this collision. We hope she makes a complete recovery.
Accidents Involving E-Scooters
According to an ABC news report, there have been 588 e-scooter accidents in New York City in 2020-2021 with a total of 538 people injured in those accidents and at least three pedestrian deaths including the actress Lisa Banes who was knocked down by a hit-and-run scooter rider on the Upper West Side.
The e-mobility boom in New York City has brought significant safety challenges to the city’s already congested streets. In addition to the pedestrian injuries, at least 17 people have been killed while riding these vehicles in 2021. Revel, which operates the electric moped share program in the city, voluntarily shut it down for a month in 2020 after three riders were killed.
Injuries to Pedestrians
According to a study published in the American Journal of Emergency Medicine (AJEM), pedestrians injured by e-scooters face potential financial burdens from hospitalization costs, medical treatments, taking time off from work and rehabilitation therapies. Based on prior studies, pedestrians who are more prone to serious injuries in such incidents include the elderly, those with vision or hearing impairment and young children.
The study gives the example of one 60-year-old woman who came to an emergency department with “an acute lumbar compression fracture” after a collision with an e-scooter. Some of the common injuries pedestrian suffer in collisions with e-scooters include head injuries, spinal trauma, multiple fractures, internal organ damage, etc.
