A 50-year-old man suffered severe injuries after he was struck by the driver of a van while crossing a street in the Park Slope neighborhood of Brooklyn. According to a report on Streetsblog.com, the man was crossing 15th Street in the west crosswalk when the van hit him as it turned from northbound Seventh Avenue onto 15th Street. The victim was transported to a local hospital where he remains in critical condition. The van’s driver remained on the scene and was not charged. Police say an investigation into this pedestrian accident is ongoing.
Surge in Pedestrian Accident Injuries and Deaths
According to the NYPD, 42,037 people were injured in traffic crashes
between Jan. 1 and Oct. 30 of this year ¬— which adds up to about 138 each day. In 2022 alone, 6,658 pedestrians have been injured, which is up 18% compared to the same period last year, NYPD statistics show. Also this year, 3,980 bicyclists have been injured, which is up 2.5% over last year.
According to Transportation Alternatives‘ latest crash analysis, traffic accident fatalities are the highest in the Bronx where crashes killed 47 people during the first nine months of 2022 — up 31% from the same period in 2021. The numbers from their analysis also show that hit-and-run crashes involving critical injuries nearly doubled in the third quarter of 2022 compared to the second quarter of the year — from 16 to 30.
Also, 16 children under the age of 18 were killed in the first nine months of 2022, which is nearly 23% higher than any full year under Vision Zero and five more than those killed in all of 2021. Also, these 16 fatalities occurred in crashes involving larger vehicles such as SUVs, pickup trucks, vans or buses.
The grim traffic accident statistics from this year prompted Mayor Eric Adams to pledge significant funding ($904 million) toward constructing additional bike and bus lanes and pedestrian spaces. Failing to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks and intersections is one of the most common causes of fatal pedestrian accidents in New York City. Drivers are required under the law to stop and yield the right of way to pedestrians in crosswalks. When there is no traffic control signal at a crosswalk, drivers must yield the right-of-way to pedestrians, particularly if the pedestrian is in a crosswalk or there is potential danger to the pedestrian
