Officials are looking for a Rolls Royce in connection with a hit-and-run collision in Brooklyn that left a 58-year-old man fatally injured. According to an NBC New York news report, police responded to a 911 call near Bayard Street and McGuinness Boulevard early morning on May 18. They found the pedestrian lying in the roadway with severe trauma to his body.
Ongoing Investigation
He was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead. Officials
said further investigation revealed that the man was attempting to cross McGuiness Boulevard walking east in the crosswalk at Bayard against the traffic signal, when a black Rolls Royce struck him and left the scene.
The victim was later identified as an elementary school ESL teacher who was returning home after celebrating his birthday with friends. So far, police have not been able to find any witnesses or surveillance video to help them figure out who the hit-and-run driver was. But they have identified the vehicle as a black Rolls Royce because of the debris left in the crosswalk at the intersection where the crash occurred. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim’s family and friends.
Hit-and-Run Crashes
Under New York law, it is illegal to leave the scene of an injury or fatal crash. New York Vehicle and Traffic Law Section 600 states: “Any person operating a motor vehicle who, knowing or having cause to know that personal injury has been caused to another person, due to an incident involving the motor vehicle operated by such person shall, before leaving the place where the said personal injury occurred, stop, exchange information and report the incident to the authorities.”
In a hit-and-run crash, injured victims and families of deceased victims suffer not only emotionally, but also financially as they deal with sudden expenses such as medical bills, loss of income and funeral preparations. There are several parties that may be held financially responsible in hit-and-run cases.
The driver and vehicle owner are both responsible parties even if the owner was not driving when the accident occurred. If the driver was on the job and/or operating a company vehicle at the time, his or her employer can also be held liable. When the driver is apprehended in a hit-and-run case, he or she can be held financially liable for the injuries, damages and losses caused. Such drivers can be held financially responsible whether or not they are arrested and/or charged. If a hit-and-run driver has injured you, please remember that you can seek compensation through the uninsured motorist clause of your auto insurance policy (even though the driver has not been identified) or through a quasi-state agency if there is no motor vehicle in the victim’s household.
Victims and their families in such cases should retain an experienced personal injury lawyer right away to help protect their legal rights. A family who has lost a loved one in a hit-and-run crash may be able to file a wrongful death lawsuit seeking compensation as well.
