Adam Siepel, 50, suffered major injuries in a bicycle accident after he was hit by a truck in Halesite. According to a report in Huntington Now, the victim was riding his bicycle on New York Avenue at the intersection of Gristmill Lane when a 2018 Chevrolet pickup truck traveling north on New York Avenue, struck him. Siepel was transported to a local hospital in critical condition.
The truck’s driver, a 52-year-old man, was not injured in the crash. Anyone with information on this bicycle accident is asked to contact police at 631-854-8252. Our thoughts and prayers are with the injured bicyclist. We wish him the very best for a speedy and full recovery.
Common Causes of Bicycle Accidents
Some of the most common causes of bicycle accidents include:
Distracted driving: When drivers fail to pay attention to the road and are distracted while driving, there is an increased risk of causing a bicycle accident.
Failing to leave adequate distance: Drivers who follow bicyclists too closely and who pass within less than 3 feet of a bicyclist are more likely to hit cyclists.
Excessive speed: When drives travel at excessive or unsafe rates of speed, they are unable to stop in time to avoid a bicycle crash. Injuries that occur at high speeds tend to be catastrophic or even fatal for bicyclists.
Failure to yield: This is yet another form of careless or reckless driving that poses severe risk of injury and death for bicyclists.
Bike lane incursions: When motorists intrude into bike lanes, they put bicyclists in harm’s way. These types of accidents often occur because motorists are impaired, distracted, inattentive or otherwise negligent (careless).
Dooring accidents: When motorists or passengers open vehicle doors without paying attention to their surroundings, they may inadvertently strike a bicyclist. These types of accidents can lead to serious injuries or even deaths.
As New York bicycle accident attorneys, we have seen many incidents resulting in severe and long-term injuries such as traumatic brain injury, spinal cord trauma, multiple broken bones, internal organ damage. Victims typically require extended hospitalization, surgery, ongoing treatment and care. They may even lose their ability to return to their jobs or make a living because of debilitating injuries and long-term disabilities.
Compensation for Victims and Families
If you have been injured in a New York bicycle accident, you may be able to seek compensation for damages including medical expenses, lost income and benefits, hospitalization, cost of rehabilitation, permanent injuries, disabilities, past and future pain and suffering, etc. An experienced New York personal injury lawyer will be able to guide victims’ families through what is often a complex legal process.
In cases where negligence (carelessness) is involved, families of deceased bicycle accident victims can file a wrongful death lawsuit seeking compensation for damages such as medical expenses, funeral costs, lost future income, pain and suffering, and loss of companionship.
Pedestrian accident victims and their families should also remember that they can seek compensation for injuries or losses in collisions even if the victim was not walking in a marked crosswalk and even if the driver involved in collision was not charged. Our law firm recovered the full one million dollar insurance policy for a girl who was not in the crosswalk when a motor vehicle hit her
