Holocaust Survivor Killed in Brooklyn Pedestrian Accident

Jack Mikulincer, a 99-year-old Holocaust survivor, was fatally injured in a Brooklyn pedestrian accident when a driver struck him as he was crossing a street near his home in his electric wheelchair. According to a Ny1.com report, the fatal collision occurred when Mikulincer was moving north on Coleridge Street at the intersection of Oriental Boulevard in Manhattan Beach the afternoon of Feb. 5.

Fatal Collision

The man driving the car remained at the scene after he struck the victim and has not been charged. Mikulincer was on his way with a friend to his synagogue when the car struck him. He was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead. We offer our deepest condolences to the family members of Jack Mikulincer for their tragic loss. They will be in our thoughts and prayers.

Under New York law, any person who is walking on foot or using a wheelchair is considered a pedestrian. Based on news reports Mikulincer was crossing the street in a crosswalk when he was hit. New York law requires motorists to stop and yield the right of way to pedestrians who are crossing the street in a crosswalk or at an intersection.

Increase in Pedestrian Accident Fatalities

Last year, New York City saw the highest number of traffic fatalities since 2013, when 279 people were killed by vehicles. Last month, Mayor Eric Adams issued a public statement promising to punish drivers if they kill, injure or put pedestrians in harm’s way by failing to yield. Mayor Adams and the city’s senior police officials said in a news conference last week that they will take strong steps to enforce the city’s Right of Way law. Even though New York City has required motorists to stop and yield to pedestrians, drivers often do not obey the law.

This move by Mayor Adams to tighten enforcement at street intersections comes after a number of recent pedestrian fatalities and injuries caused by drivers who failed to yield the right of way, particularly at crosswalks and intersections. Pedestrian accidents have the potential to result in catastrophic or even fatal injuries. Some of the common injuries suffered in pedestrian accidents include head trauma, spinal cord injuries, broken bones, internal organ damage, limb amputations, etc.
