Girl Suffers Facial Injuries In Long Island Dog Attack

Girl Suffers Facial Injuries In Long Island Dog AttackA 11-year-old girl was airlifted to a Long Island hospital with facial injuries after she and two other adults were attacked by a dog in the town of Hicksville. According to a CBS News New York news report, police were called to a home on Lantern Road the afternoon of Oct. 15 for a dog bite incident. Neighbors told CBS News New York that they heard screams and then saw the girl who lives in the house, her mother and the 74-year-old homeowner coming out of the house with serious injuries.

Severe Injuries Reported

Police said the two women suffered leg injuries and the child suffered injuries to her face. Neighbors said the child appeared to have been severely bitten in the face and limbs. Based on the news report, the child and her mother who lived upstairs in the home came through the gate of the backyard where the homeowner’s two dogs were at the time. All three injured victims are expected to survive.

The media outlet’s cameras also captured two dogs being removed from the house by animal control and emergency services who came equipped with long poles and protective gear. The dogs will be held by the town of Oyster Bay for evaluation. A neighbor told CBS News New York that she wasn’t even aware that there were dogs in that home. The investigation into this case is ongoing. Our thoughts and prayers are with the injured victims of this dog attack. We wish them the very best for a quick and full recovery.

Potential Impact of Dog Bite Injuries

Child dog bite injuries are a significant concern because they can lead to both physical and emotional trauma. Children are particularly vulnerable to dog bites due to their smaller size. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), most dog bites involving children occur in familiar settings, often at home or in the presence of a known dog.

Physical injuries from dog bites can be devastating both for children and adults. These injuries can range from minor scratches to severe wounds requiring stitches or even reconstructive surgery. Commonly affected areas include the face, hands, and arms, which can lead to long-term scarring and nerve damage. Additionally, infections are a potential complication if the wounds are not promptly treated. The emotional impact of a dog bite can be profound. Children and adults may develop a fear of dogs, anxiety, or even post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) following an attack.
