Girl Killed in Queens Pedestrian Accident

Pedestrian AccidentDolma Naadhun, 7, was struck and killed by an SUV while she was crossing the street the evening of Feb. 18. According to a news report on NY1.com, an SUV hit the girl as she walked across the intersection of Newtown Road and 45th Street, just down the block from her home in Astoria. Investigators said the driver, who remained at the scene, failed to come to a complete stop in spite of a stop sign at the intersection.

No charges have been filed against the driver of the SUV. Family members have set up a GoFundMe page to help the young girl’s family pay for a memorial and funeral expenses. We offer our deepest condolences to the family for their heartbreaking loss. They will be in our thoughts and prayers.

Dangerous Streets

This fatal pedestrian accident comes soon after a City Council hearing where transportation officials were asked why 2022 was the deadliest year since 2014 for child fatalities due to traffic accidents. According to the New York City Department of Transportation (NYCDOT), 16 children were killed in traffic accidents in 2022.

Parents in the Astoria neighborhood where this girl was killed say more traffic lights should replace stop signs especially where this pedestrian accident happened. Residents say there are a number of rolling stops that happen in the neighborhood, particularly around dinnertime when people are getting home after work.

According to the NYPD, 42,037 people were injured in traffic crashes between Jan. 1 and Oct. 30 of 2022 — which adds up to about 138 each day. In 2022 alone, 6,658 pedestrians have been injured, which was up 18% compared to the same period in 2021, NYPD statistics showed. Also, 16 children under the age of 18 were killed in the first nine months of 2022, which is nearly 23% higher than any full year under Vision Zero and five more than those killed in all of 2021. These 16 fatalities occurred in crashes involving larger vehicles such as SUVs, pickup trucks, vans or buses.
