Fatal Hit-and-Run Crash in Brooklyn

Car crash attorneyPolice are looking for as many as three people who ran from the site of a deadly two-car accident in Brooklyn that was caught on camera. According to a CBS New York news report, investigators said the drivers of both cars will face repercussions, one for driving with a suspended license and the other for fleeing the scene of the crash.

Ongoing Investigation

Surveillance video shows that the fatal hit-and-run crash occurred when a Toyota that was slowly rolling past a stop sign on Stockholm Street in Bushwick made it half way through the intersection before it was T-boned by a Kia traveling on Irving Avenue. The collision sent both cars spinning, hitting another vehicle. Four people in the Toyota were transported to an area hospital.

All three occupants including the driver of the Kia fled the scene, officials said. A male passenger in the Toyota died from his injuries and two others in that vehicle — a 34-year-old and a 29-year-old — are in critical condition. Anyone with information is asked to contact NYPD’s confidential Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477). The search for the three occupants of the Toyota is underway and the investigation is ongoing.

Why T-Bone Accidents Are Dangerous

T-bone accidents, also known as side-impact collisions, are particularly dangerous due to the inherent vulnerability of a vehicle’s side and the potential for severe injuries to occupants. In a T-bone collision, one vehicle strikes the side of another at a perpendicular angle, forming a “T” shape. The side of a vehicle offers significantly less protection compared to the front or rear, where crumple zones and other safety features are more robustly designed and located.

The risk of injury in T-bone accidents is greater because the impact tends to occur at or near the passenger cabin, where occupants are seated. Unlike head-on collisions where the front of a vehicle is engineered to absorb and dissipate impact forces, the sides lack sufficient structural reinforcement. As a result, occupants are more susceptible to direct trauma from the striking vehicle.

Additionally, T-bone accidents often involve high speeds or failure to yield at intersections, increasing the force of impact. The proximity of the impact to the driver or passenger doors leaves occupants vulnerable to severe injuries, including head trauma, spinal injuries, and fractures.

Compensation for Victims

The driver of the vehicle involved in a hit-and-run collision and the vehicle’s owner can be held financially liable for the injuries, damages and losses caused. Such drivers — when located — can be held financially responsible whether or not they are arrested and/or charged. Also, if the driver was on the job at the time, his or her employer may also be held liable. If a hit-and-run driver has injured you, please remember that you can seek compensation through the uninsured motorist clause of your auto insurance policy (even though the driver has not been identified) or through a quasi-state agency if there is no motor vehicle in the victim’s household. Our law firm recovered $2,000,000 (two million dollars) in a hit-and-run accident.

Those injured in a car accident, pedestrian accident or as a result of someone else’s negligence (carelessness) may be able to seek compensation from at-fault parties for damages including, but not limited to, medical expenses, lost wages and benefits, hospitalization, rehabilitation, permanent injuries, disabilities, past and future pain and suffering, etc. Families that have lost loved ones in car accidents can seek compensation for damages such as lost future income, medical and funeral costs, pain and suffering, etc.

Victims and their families in such cases should retain an experienced personal injury lawyer right away to help protect their legal rights. A family who has lost a loved one in a hit-and-run crash can file a wrongful death lawsuit seeking compensation as well.
