Elderly Pedestrian Struck by Citi Bike Rider Dies from Injuries

pedestrian accidentA 69-year-old pedestrian who had been struck by a Citi Bike rider died from her injuries. According to a report on Streetsblog.org, the woman, whose name has not been officially released yet, had been walking at the intersection of Grand and Chrystie streets the morning of Sept. 5 when she was hit by a bicyclist who had been heading north on Chrystie Street. The force of the crash sent the woman to the ground. She suffered severe head trauma as a result of the pedestrian accident, police said. The woman was transported to a local hospital where she died two days later.

The Village Sun has identified the victim as Priscilla Lok, a nearby resident. CBS2 posted a brief video of the crash that shows the bicyclist moving northbound in the bike lane, striking the pedestrian in the northeast corner. The video shows the bicyclist initially remaining on the scene, but then leaving after talking to police.

NYC Accident Statistics

According to statistics maintained by the New York City Department of Transportation (DOT), in 2022, three pedestrians were killed by bicyclists while 131 pedestrians and bicyclists were killed by drivers of cars and trucks. In that same year, 313 pedestrians were injured by bicyclists, while 13,190 pedestrians and bicyclists were injured by car and truck drivers. A significant majority of the injuries and fatalities on New York City’s roads last year – about 98% ¬– were caused by drivers of larger vehicles. This pedestrian death marks the third fatality to be caused by an electric bike or moped rider this year, versus 61 pedestrians killed by car and truck drivers.

The same data shows that 40 pedestrians have been injured so far this year by bicyclists and electric micro-mobility users (such as mopeds and e-bikes), versus 5,259 injured by car and truck drivers. About 95% of deaths and 99% of injuries this year have been caused by drivers of cars and trucks. On Sept. 4, another elderly pedestrian was struck and killed in Chinatown by the driver of an Access-a-Ride van.

Injuries and Compensation

Injured victims of pedestrian accidents and bicycle accidents can seek compensation from at-fault parties for damages including, but not limited to, medical expenses, lost wages and benefits, hospitalization, rehabilitation, permanent injuries, disabilities, past and future pain and suffering, etc. Families that have lost loved ones in pedestrian accidents can seek compensation for damages such as medical and funeral costs, pain and suffering, lost future income, etc.

Pedestrian accident victims and their families should also remember that they can seek compensation for injuries or losses in collisions even if the victim was not walking in a marked crosswalk and even if the driver involved in collision was not charged. Our law firm recovered the full one-million-dollar insurance policy for a girl who was not in the crosswalk when a motor vehicle hit her.
