Chaosheng Wu, 80, was killed in a pedestrian accident
in Staten Island while he attempted to cross a roadway, police said. According to a report in the Staten Island Advance, the fatal pedestrian collision occurred the morning of March 7 on Hylan Boulevard in Dongan Hills when Wu who was trying to cross the road was struck by an SUV. The outlet reports that Wu, who lives in that community, was found lying in the roadway unconscious and unresponsive.
He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. The driver of the SUV, a 65-year-old woman, remained at the scene. The SUV was going north on Hylan toward Rosebank at the time. No charges were filed against the driver pending an ongoing investigation. We offer our deepest condolences to the family of Chaosheng Wu for their tragic loss. They will be in our thoughts and prayers.
Disturbing Increase in Pedestrian Fatalities
The Staten Island Advance reports that this is the latest pedestrian death that marks the continuation of a disturbing trend on Staten Island. The newspaper reports that there have been at least seven pedestrian fatalities since Oct. 31, several of which have occurred on “the notoriously treacherous Hylan Boulevard.”
Four pedestrians were killed on Staten Island in 2023, according to NYC Department of Transportation statistics. The only other comparable year to 2024 in terms of fatal pedestrian accidents is 2015, when six pedestrians were killed in a three-month period. This represented 54% of the 11 fatalities involving pedestrians that year, which was in the early stages of the Vision Zero initiative.
Dangers Faced by Senior Citizens on NYC Streets
New York’s senior pedestrians face significant dangers while navigating city streets. Older adults, particularly those aged 65 and above, are disproportionately at risk of being injured or killed in traffic accidents. Factors such as slower walking speeds, reduced reaction times and vision or hearing impairments make crossing busy intersections more hazardous. Many seniors also rely on canes or walkers, further increasing their vulnerability.
One major issue in such accidents is reckless driving including speeding, failure to yield and distracted driving. Even with designated crosswalks and pedestrian signals, drivers often fail to stop for elderly pedestrians, putting them in harm’s way. The city’s fast-paced environment can be overwhelming for older pedestrians. Aggressive cyclists, electric scooters, and crowded sidewalks add to the dangers seniors face daily.
Elderly pedestrians are also more prone to suffering serious or fatal injuries when they are hit by a vehicle. They are at risk of suffering severe injuries including fractures or broken bones, traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord damage, internal bleeding and lacerations. Other common injuries include broken ribs, concussions and soft tissue damage. Due to age-related fragility, recovery is often prolonged and complications are more likely.
