Eight people suffered injuries when a van crashed into a car on Manhattan’s East Side the morning of March 5 sending the vehicle careening into an outdoor dining area and scaffolding. According to a WABC news report, six adults and two children were injured in the car accident at 50th Street and Second Avenue. Officials say the 66-year-old driver of a white van was heading southbound on Second Avenue when it collided with the rear of a sedan.
Several People Injured
The sedan then crashed into the outdoor dining area in front of 945 Second
Avenue, which was not occupied at the time. Flying debris from the crash injured two boys, ages 5 and 7. The white van then traveled another block, jumped the curb, destroyed a fruit stand and came to rest in scaffolding. Several people in the sedan were injured along with a few pedestrians including a 92-year-old man who was struck at the intersection of 40th Street and 1st Avenue. None of the injuries is believed to be life threatening.
The van’s driver was taken into custody by police, but suffered a medical episode while at the stationhouse. Police transported the man to a hospital and are now looking into the possibility that he may have suffered a medical episode while driving. Firefighters secured the scaffolding and debris at the accident site and the Department of Buildings determined all damaged structures and buildings were structurally sound. We wish all of the injured victims the very best for a speedy and complete recovery.
Medical Conditions That May Affect Driving
Here are examples of some medical conditions that may potentially affect an individual’s ability to drive safely:
Epilepsy: This is an obvious medical reason why people should not drive. Seizures can strike any time and cause people to lose consciousness without warning. If you are prone to seizures, you should not be driving.
Blackouts: If you are prone to sudden blackouts, that may be another reason to give up driving. If you have a blackout while driving, it may be dangerous not just for you and your passengers, but also others on the street.
Neurological conditions: There are several neurological conditions such as multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease and motor neuron disease that may affect your ability to drive.
Medications: Some medications can make you drowsy. So, if you are taking these medications, check with your to see doctor if it’s safe for you to drive. Among the most common drugs linked to drowsiness are strong opioid painkillers, tranquilizers and some antidepressants. Insulin tablets for diabetes may also lead to dangerously low blood sugar.
