NYPD officials released photos of a car on Feb. 14 as they searched for its driver wanted in connection with a hit-and-run bicycle accident in the Bronx that left the bicyclist with a severe head injury. According to a news report, the bicycle accident occurred early morning on Feb. 4. Police said a 55-year-old bicyclist was traveling southbound on Westchester Avenue when he was struck from behind by a dark-colored vehicle.
The bicyclist was thrown on the roadway and suffered severe head trauma, officials said. The driver of the vehicle did not remain at the scene and was last seen heading south on Westchester Avenue. Emergency medical personnel transported the bicycle accident victim to a local hospital in critical condition. The hit-and-run vehicle is described only as a dark-colored sedan. Anyone with information is asked to contact NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477). Our thoughts and prayers are with the injured victim and we wish them the very best for a speedy and complete recovery.
Leaving the Scene of a Bicycle Accident
Leaving the scene of a bicycle accident in New York City is a serious offense with legal consequences. Under New York law, any driver involved in an accident that causes injury or property damage must stop, provide their information and offer assistance to the injured victim, if necessary. Failing to do so, especially when a victim is injured, can result in criminal charges, depending on the severity of the injuries.
Injured bicyclists may require immediate medical attention, and leaving them without assistance can worsen their condition. Drivers who flee the scene may face fines, license suspension or even jail time. If the accident results in serious injury or death, the penalties become significantly more severe, potentially leading to felony hit-and-run charges.
Hit-and-run accidents often complicate insurance claims and liability issues, making it difficult for victims to receive compensation for medical bills and damages. An experienced bicycle accident lawyer can help injured victims and their families navigate what can be a complex legal process.
Compensation for a Hit-and-Run Collision
In a hit-and-run collision, the driver and vehicle owner are both responsible parties even if the owner was not driving when the accident occurred. If the driver was on the job and/or operating a company vehicle at the time, his or her employer can also be held liable. When the driver is apprehended in a hit-and-run case, he or she can be held financially liable for the injuries, damages and losses caused.
Such drivers can be held financially responsible whether or not they are arrested and/or charged. If a hit-and-run driver has injured you, please remember that you can seek compensation through the uninsured motorist clause of your auto insurance policy (even though the driver has not been identified) or through a quasi-state agency if there is no motor vehicle in the victim’s household. You should consult a personal injury lawyer immediately to protect your rights.
