Deadly Brooklyn Pedestrian Accident Involves Construction Truck

Pedestrian Accident AttormeyErika Wajsman, 77, was killed in a pedestrian accident in the Midwood area of Brooklyn after a dump truck hit her at a street intersection. According to The Brooklyn Paper, Wajsman was crossing the intersection of East 19th Street and Avenue P when the vehicle struck her. Deadly Crashes in Brooklyn

The Brooklyn Paper reports that the borough has seen a spate of deadly crashes just this month. Statistics show that six people have been injured in pedestrian collisions since November and four have died, including Wajsman. The numbers also show that many of these victims were senior citizens. On Nov. 16, a 72-year-old woman was struck and killed while crossing the street in Ford Hamilton, while a 79-year-old grandmother was fatally struck in Crown Heights on Nov. 3.

This year, a number of people have been killed in collisions involving dump trucks in Brooklyn. In early August, a dump truck driver fatally struck a 75-year-old woman in Coney Island and fled the scene. Just weeks later, an 89-year-old woman was killed by a dump truck in a hit-and-run crash in Williamsburg, even though the driver was later found and arrested.

Pedestrian Accidents Involving Seniors in NYC

Pedestrian accidents involving the elderly in New York City are a significant and growing concern. Various factors pose dangers and contribute to the vulnerability of senior citizens on the streets. Elderly pedestrians face increased risks due to poor or impaired mobility, slower reaction times, and potential health issues, making them more susceptible to accidents.

Statistics have shown that seniors are disproportionately affected by pedestrian accidents in New York City. Factors contributing to these incidents include traffic congestion, crowded streets, and the city’s fast-paced environment. Crosswalks, although intended for safety, can still be dangerous for seniors due to drivers failing to yield or obey traffic signals.

Vision and hearing impairments among the elderly can contribute to accidents, making it harder for them to notice oncoming traffic or hear warning signals. Additionally, there is a risk of falls, especially on uneven sidewalks or poorly maintained pedestrian areas.

Compensation for Victims

Injured victims of pedestrian accidents and bicycle accidents can seek compensation from at-fault parties for damages including, but not limited to, medical expenses, lost wages and benefits, hospitalization, rehabilitation, permanent injuries, disabilities, past and future pain and suffering, etc. Families that have lost loved ones in pedestrian accidents can seek compensation for damages such as medical and funeral costs, pain and suffering, lost future income, etc.

Pedestrian accident victims and their families should also remember that they can seek compensation for injuries or losses in collisions even if the victim was not walking in a marked crosswalk and even if the driver involved in collision was not charged. Our law firm recovered the full one-million-dollar insurance policy for a girl who was not in the crosswalk when a motor vehicle hit her.
