At least six people were injured in a pedestrian accident on Christmas Day outside the iconic NYC Macy’s after a taxi driver collided into a group of people. According to an ABC 7 news report, the incident unfolded outside Macy’s at 34th Street and Sixth Avenue, a little after 4 p.m. on Dec. 25 when a 58-year-old northbound driver suffered a medical emergency and jumped a curb at the busy intersection. A 41-year-old woman and her son were hit and trapped under the vehicle. The cab reportedly struck the victim from behind and landed on top of her.
Ongoing Investigation
Ryan Tucker who was visiting from Oregon said his wife was hit in the back of the shoulder by the taxicab. He and others then helped extricate the mother and son who were pinned under the vehicle. The mother who spoke with ABC7 said she was visiting from Australia with her husband and son, who got out of his second surgery the day after the incident. She said he broke his right femur and also suffered severe burn injuries on his leg. She expected him to be in the hospital for “quite some time.”
In addition to the mother and son, a 49-year-old woman was also taken to another hospital for treatment. Three others sustained non-life-threatening injuries. The taxi driver was also transported to a hospital and is expected to recover. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all the victims of this pedestrian accident and we wish all those who were injured the very best for a speedy and complete recovery.
The Impact of a Pedestrian Accident
Pedestrian accidents, even when non-life-threatening, can have significant and far-reaching consequences for those involved. The aftermath of such accidents often includes physical, emotional and financial challenges that can disrupt not just the injured person’s life, but also the lives of his or her family members.
Physically, non-life-threatening injuries such as fractures, sprains, bruises or concussions can lead to temporary or long-term impairments. Recovery often requires medical intervention, physical therapy or rehabilitation, which can be time-intensive and costly. Additionally, persistent pain or limited mobility may hinder a person’s ability to perform daily activities or return to work, further compounding the difficulties they face.
Emotionally, the trauma of a pedestrian accident can leave lasting psychological scars. Victims often experience anxiety, depression or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), particularly if the accident was severe or involved a near-death experience. Fear of walking in busy areas or crossing streets may develop, leading to changes in lifestyle and reduced quality of life. These emotional effects can sometimes be more debilitating than the physical injuries themselves.
Financially, the burden can be overwhelming as well. Even minor accidents can result in substantial medical bills, loss of income due to missed work, and potential legal costs. For individuals without adequate insurance coverage, these expenses can lead to significant debt and financial instability.
Injuries and Compensation
Injured victims of pedestrian accidents and bicycle accidents can seek compensation from at-fault parties for damages including, but not limited to, medical expenses, lost wages and benefits, hospitalization, rehabilitation, permanent injuries, disabilities, past and future pain and suffering, etc. Families that have lost loved ones in pedestrian accidents can seek compensation for damages such as medical and funeral costs, pain and suffering, lost future income, etc.
Pedestrian accident victims and their families should remember that they can seek compensation for injuries or losses in collisions even if the victim was not walking in a marked crosswalk and even if the driver involved in collision was not charged. Our law firm recovered the full one-million-dollar insurance policy for a girl who was not in the crosswalk when a motor vehicle hit her.
