Chinatown Hit and Run Pedestrian Accident Fatally Injures Man

Pedestrian Accident AttorneyA man was killed in a hit-and-run pedestrian accident in Chinatown early morning on March 6. According to Streetsblog, the pedestrian was struck on Canal Street between Lafayette Street and Broadway. Police said they found the man unconscious, unresponsive and face up in the roadway. He had suffered severe body trauma, officials said. The man was transported to a local hospital where he died. Police said the driver of a dark-colored SUV that struck the victim left the scene. They are still trying to locate the vehicle and its driver. We offer our deepest condolences to victim’s family for their tragic loss.

Dangerous Roadway for Pedestrians

According to Streetsblog, Canal Street is one of the most dangerous roadways in the city, which has long been a focal point for street safety advocates. Last year alone, on just a half-mile stretch between Broadway and Bowery, there were 84 reported crashes, injuring 27 people including six bicyclists and eight pedestrians. Also, in the decade that the Vision Zero initiative has been in effect, there have been 2,680 reported crashes on Canal Street injuring 448 people including 140 pedestrians and 66 bicyclists with one bicyclist and four pedestrians fatally injured.

Streetsblog reports that Canal Street is unsafe especially in the early morning or late-night hours. Almost 90% of this busy thoroughfare is set aside for motorists. However, there are periods of time during the day when there are three times as many pedestrians as cars on this roadway. The problem was so persistent that the city’s Department of Transportation held a virtual workshop to discuss it in 2022. Last year, the agency launched an eight-month study to improve pedestrian and bicycle safety there. The study’s findings have not yet been published.

Injuries and Compensation

Injured victims of pedestrian accidents and bicycle accidents can seek compensation from at-fault parties for damages including, but not limited to, medical expenses, lost wages and benefits, hospitalization, rehabilitation, permanent injuries, disabilities, past and future pain and suffering, etc. Families that have lost loved ones in pedestrian accidents can seek compensation for damages such as medical and funeral costs, pain and suffering, lost future income, etc.

Pedestrian accident victims and their families should remember that they can seek compensation for injuries or losses in collisions even if the victim was not walking in a marked crosswalk and even if the driver involved in collision was not charged. Our law firm recovered the full one-million-dollar insurance policy for a girl who was not in the crosswalk when a motor vehicle hit her.

In a hit-and-run collision, the driver and vehicle owner are both responsible parties even if the owner was not driving when the accident occurred. If the driver was on the job and/or operating a company vehicle at the time, his or her employer can also be held liable. When the driver is apprehended in a hit-and-run case, he or she can be held financially liable for the injuries, damages and losses caused. Such drivers can be held financially responsible whether or not they are arrested and/or charged. If a hit-and-run driver has injured you, please remember that you can seek compensation through the uninsured motorist clause of your auto insurance policy (even though the driver has not been identified) or through a quasi-state agency if there is no motor vehicle in the victim’s household. You should consult a personal injury lawyer immediately to protect your rights.
