A 44-year-old woman suffered critical injuries in a pedestrian accident after a chain-reaction crash at a Brooklyn intersection. According to news reports, police said the woman had just parked her car near the corner of East 27th Street and Avenue W in Sheepshead Bay when a white car and a delivery van collided at the intersection the afternoon of Oct. 5.
The white car jumped the curb and struck the pedestrian. The victim was pinned against a brick wall outside a house on the corner, according to reports. She was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition with severe leg injuries. The New York Daily News reported that she may lose both her legs as a result of the injuries suffered in the crash. Our thoughts and prayers are with the injured pedestrian here.
Ongoing Investigation
Brooklynpaper.com reported that a preliminary NYPD investigation showed that the 60-year-old male driver of the delivery van was traveling north on East 27th Street at Avenue W when he collided with the eastbound car. The car then collided with another parked vehicle, mounted the curb and struck the pedestrian. NYPD officials arrested the driver of the car and charged him with aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.
The news website also reported that the van involved in this collision was caught speeding in a school zone in Brooklyn on Dec. 9, 2022 as well as having several parking violations. The site also reports that over the last five years, the intersection of Avenue W and East 27th Street has been the scene of five crashes that resulted in 10 injuries — one bicyclist and nine motorists — according to data compiled by NYC Crash Mapper.
Damages in Pedestrian Accidents
Pedestrian accidents tend to prove costly for victims and their families, who often face significant expenses such as paying medical bills and expenses relating to rehabilitation and ongoing care. These types of accidents also cause permanent injuries and disabilities that result in loss of earning capacity and/or require round-the-clock nursing care. Often, pedestrian accidents result in deaths.
Injured victims of pedestrian accidents and bicycle accidents can seek compensation from at-fault parties for damages including, but not limited to, medical expenses, lost wages and benefits, hospitalization, rehabilitation, permanent injuries, disabilities, past and future pain and suffering, etc. Families that have lost loved ones in pedestrian accidents can seek compensation for damages such as medical and funeral costs, pain and suffering, lost future income, etc.
Contacting an Experienced Lawyer
Pedestrian accident victims and their families should also remember that they can seek compensation for injuries or losses in collisions even if the victim was not walking in a marked crosswalk and even if the driver involved in collision was not charged. Our law firm recovered the full one-million-dollar insurance policy for a girl who was not in the crosswalk when a motor vehicle hit her.
