Brooklyn Car Crash Injures Six People

Six people were injured, three seriously, after two cars collided and jumped the curb in Brooklyn. According to a CBS New York news report, witnesses said an SUV hit a service vehicle at the intersection of Flatbush and Flatlands avenues. Both wound up jumping the curb and crashing on sidewalks on opposite sides of the busy roadway. Four of the six victims were occupants of the two vehicles. The two most seriously injured in this car accident were in the SUV, officials said.

Serious Injuries Reported

A neighbor told CBS he ran out of his apartment to help the victims. He said he saw two victims unconscious, broke one of the vehicles’ windows and pulled one of the victims out of the car and then went to the other side and pulled the other victim out of the car.

Witnesses said the driver of the SUV was traveling at a high rate of speed and could have seriously injured other pedestrians who were at the intersection. Three people suffered serious injuries and three others sustained non-life-threatening injuries. All were transported to a local hospital for treatment. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims of this crash.

The Dangers of Speeding

Speeding is often a significant factor in traffic accident injuries and fatalities. According to the National Safety Council (NSC), the role of speeding in crashes can be described in terms of its effect on the driver, the vehicle and the road. Excessive speed reduces the amount of time the driver has to react in a dangerous situation to avoid a collision, increases vehicle stopping distance and reduces the ability of road safety structures such as guardrails, median dividers or concrete barriers to protect vehicle occupants in the event of a crash.

The organization estimates that speeding was a factor in 26% of all traffic accident deaths in 2019, killing 9,478 people or an average of more than 25 people each day. The total number of fatal car accidents in 2029 that were attributable to speeding was 8,544. A crash here was considered “speed-related” if the driver was charged with a speeding-related offense or if racing, driving too fast for conditions or exceeding the posted speed limit was indicated as a contributing factor.
