A man was killed in a bicycle accident in the Bronx the afternoon of July 3, which
officials said, involved a hit-and-run driver. According to a report in the New York Daily News, the fatal crash occurred near East 172nd Street and Metcalf Avenue in the Soundview section. The victim — reported to be a delivery worker — was struck by a white Jeep. Police said the woman who was driving the Jeep then unstrapped a baby in the back seat and left in another white SUV.
Witnesses in the neighborhood saw the woman being picked up by the second driver and said she didn’t even stop to check on the victim. One witness estimated the hit-and-run driver was traveling well over the speed limit — possibly as fast as 80 mph. The bicyclist was rushed to an area hospital, but succumbed to his injuries. Police are still looking for the driver of the Jeep. We offer our deepest condolences to the deceased bicyclist’s family members.
Increase in Traffic Deaths
As of Thursday, June 30, traffic accidents citywide had claimed the lives of 20 people using bicycles, scooters and mopeds this year. This is according to the street safety advocacy group, Transportation Alternatives. So far in 2022, there have been 112 traffic deaths — a 29% increase from the corresponding period in 2018, which was the safest year for Mayor Bill de Blasio’s Vision Zero program.
From the end of 2021, New York City saw at least 266 deaths among pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists. This year has been the deadliest year in the Bronx for crashes since the launch of the Vision Zero program. Safety advocates are calling on Mayor Eric Adams to make streets safer for bicyclists by adding more protected bike lanes. Many bicycle accidents in the city have occurred at street intersections.
Injuries and Compensation
A number of bicycle accidents in New York City are still caused by negligent (careless) drivers. Bicycle accidents often result in catastrophic injuries or even death. Victims who have been injured in bicycle accidents may be able to seek compensation for damages including, but not limited to, medical expenses, lost income and benefits, hospitalization, rehabilitation, permanent injuries, disabilities, past and future pain and suffering, etc.
Families of deceased bicycle accident victims may be able to file a wrongful death lawsuit seeking compensation for damages such as lost future income, funeral costs, medical expenses, pain and suffering, etc. An experienced personal injury lawyer will be able to guide you through what can quickly become a complex process and help you maximize the compensation you receive.
If you or a loved one has been injured in a bicycle accident, there are a number of steps you would be well advised to take in order to protect your rights. File a police report and make sure you get a copy of the report for your records. Your New York bicycle accident lawyer can also help you obtain a copy of this report.
It is important that you get prompt medical attention treatment and care for your injuries. This helps establish a record of the injuries that you suffered and the treatment you have received since. Make sure you preserve all documents including receipts of expenses and the records of lost wages. Immediately contact an experienced New York bicycle accident lawyer who will help protect your rights and help ensure that you receive maximum compensation for your losses.
When identified, hit-and-run drivers as well as the vehicle owners can be held financially responsible whether or not they are arrested and/or charged. Please remember that you can seek compensation through the uninsured motorist clause of your auto insurance policy (even though the driver has not been identified) or through a quasi-state agency if there is no motor vehicle in your (victim’s) household.
