An elderly man suffered serious injuries in a bicycle accident after being struck by a hit-and-run driver in Manhattan, Streetsblog NYC reports. According to NYPD officials, they arrested the hit-and-run driver who hit the 65-year-old man on an electric bike the evening of July 29. Police said 21-year-old Jasir Vann was driving south on Second Avenue when he struck the bicyclist who was also traveling southbound.
The bicyclist suffered severe head trauma and was transported in critical condition to Bellevue Hospital as Vann fled, police said. Police arrested Vann about two hours later and charged him with leaving the scene, Streetsblog reports. They are still investigating the cause of this bicycle accident. Our thoughts and prayers are with the injured bicyclist. We wish him a speedy and complete recovery.
Dangers Faced by Bicyclists in Manhattan
Bicyclists in Manhattan face numerous dangers due to the borough’s dense traffic, limited space, and fast-paced environment. One of the most significant risks is collision with motor vehicles, especially during peak commuting hours. Drivers often fail to yield to bicyclists when turning, and “dooring” incidents — where a parked car’s door opens into a cyclist’s path — are common on narrow, crowded streets. Trucks and buses also pose a threat, particularly at intersections and during lane changes.
Another major hazard is the poor condition of Manhattan’s road infrastructure. Potholes, uneven pavement and faded bike lane markings increase the chance of collisions. Many designated bike lanes are frequently blocked by delivery trucks or double-parked cars, pushing riders into unpredictable traffic. Inadequate enforcement of traffic laws often leaves these dangers unaddressed.
Bicycle accidents often result in a range of injuries, from minor to life-threatening. Common injuries include fractures — especially to the arms, wrists, and collarbones — caused by falls or collisions. Head injuries, including concussions or traumatic brain injuries (TBIs), are also common. Bicyclists may also suffer from road rash, lacerations and bruises. More severe accidents can lead to spinal cord injuries, internal bleeding or organ damage, especially in high-speed or vehicle-involved crashes. Facial injuries and dental trauma are also common. Even minor crashes can cause long-term pain or mobility issues.
Compensation for a Hit-and-Run Collision
In a hit-and-run collision, the driver and vehicle owner are both responsible parties even if the owner was not driving when the accident occurred. If the driver was on the job and/or operating a company vehicle at the time, his or her employer can also be held liable. When the driver is apprehended in a hit-and-run case, he or she can be held financially liable for the injuries, damages and losses caused.
Such drivers can be held financially responsible whether or not they are arrested and/or charged. If a hit-and-run driver has injured you, please remember that you can seek compensation through the uninsured motorist clause of your auto insurance policy (even though the driver has not been identified) or through a quasi-state agency if there is no motor vehicle in the victim’s household. You should consult a personal injury lawyer immediately to protect your rights.
