Bicyclist Struck and Killed by Delivery Truck in Soho

bicycle accident attorneyGeorgios Smaragdis, 44, of Brooklyn, was killed in a bicycle accident after he was doored by a parked passenger van and fell in the path of a delivery truck in SoHo, Straus News reports. An accident video viewed by Straus News showed a driver in a parked Mercedes Benz, a 43-year-old man, on the northeast side of Broome Street, opening the driver side door as Smaragdis was riding west on Broome Street the morning of May 1. The bicyclist was unable to stop his e-bike and collided with the open door.

Ongoing Investigation

He then fell a short distance away before being run over by the wheels of the delivery truck. Police discovered the victim lying in the roadway with serious head injuries. He was rushed to an area hospital, but succumbed to his injuries shortly after the incident. We offer our deepest condolences to Georgios Smaragdis’ family for their tragic loss. They will be in our thoughts and prayers.

Both, the 54-year-old driver of the delivery truck and the driver of the Mercedes Benz van remained at the scene, police said. Broome Street does not have a protected bike lane. This deadly crash brings the number of bicycle accident fatalities involving other motor vehicles to 12 this year. There were 11 bicycle accident deaths in the city during the same period last year.

Dooring Accidents in New York City

Dooring accidents — where cyclists collide with suddenly opened vehicle doors — pose a significant threat to New York City bicyclists. Bicycle dooring accidents are dangerous as they present a sudden, often unavoidable hazard between a moving bicyclist and a car door that opens into their path. These incidents happen with little warning, giving bicyclists no time to swerve or brake. The impact often throws riders into traffic, leading to severe injuries or death, especially if they are struck by a passing vehicle. Common injuries include broken bones, concussions, spinal trauma, and in some cases, permanent disability.

Dooring is especially dangerous in cities like New York, where narrow bike lanes are placed adjacent to parked cars. Without adequate space or physical barriers, bicyclists are highly vulnerable. The element of surprise, combined with vehicle speed and traffic density, increases the risk of serious injuries for a dooring accident victim.

Under New York Vehicle and Traffic Law Section 1214, it is illegal to open a car door into traffic unless it is safe to do so without impeding other road users. Between 2014 and 2019, at least eight cyclists died due to dooring incidents in New York City, with five fatalities occurring within a 16-month span. In 2024, a 64-year-old bicyclist was fatally doored on Broadway in Brooklyn, a known high-risk corridor lacking adequate bike infrastructure.
