A woman riding her bicycle and her passenger were critically injured in a Brooklyn accident after she was hit by a dump truck at a busy intersection. According to a report on Streetsblog.org, the truck driver, 52, struck a 29-year-old cargo-bike cyclist and her 54-year-old passenger at the intersection of Tillary and Adams streets — the spot where thousands of bicyclists enter and leave the Brooklyn Bridge bike path every day. The victim as well as her passenger suffered head trauma and were taken to a local hospital in critical condition.
The truck driver was headed westbound on Tillary Street and the bicyclist was heading eastbound just west of the Adams Street intersection and was preparing to turn left. The bicycle was broken into two pieces due to the collision, the report said. Streetsblog found out from its own investigation that the dump truck had been caught on camera three times for speeding and twice for running red lights since 2020. Our thoughts and prayers are with the injured victims and we wish them the very best for a speedy and complete recovery.
Dangerous Intersection
The report also states that the intersection where this collision occurred is “one of the scariest” in downtown Brooklyn for bicyclists. Just this year alone, city statistics show there have been 28 crashes at that intersection, causing injuries to three bicyclists, two pedestrians and 12 motorists.
A slightly larger zone, encompassing three blocks of Tillary Street between Flatbush Avenue and Cadman Plaza West, has been the site of 87 reported crashes this year in the first 10 months of 2023, injuring seven bicyclists, three pedestrians and 32 motorists, Streetsblog reports. Also, 2023 has been an especially bad year for bicyclists with 27 deaths and 4,515 injuries in the city. That is about 14 bicyclists injured each day.
Bicycle Accidents Involving Large Trucks
Bicycle accidents involving large trucks can result in significantly different injury patterns compared to collisions involving smaller vehicles. When a bicycle and a large truck collide, the marked difference in size and weight between them tends to have severe consequences for the cyclist.
In such incidents, the bicyclist is at a substantial disadvantage, facing greater vulnerability due to minimal physical protection. In a collision, large trucks, weighing several tons and towering over bicyclists, typically cause catastrophic injuries to the cyclists.
One of the most common injuries that occurs in bicycle-truck accidents is traumatic head injury. Despite wearing helmets, bicyclists may suffer from traumatic brain injuries, ranging from concussions to severe brain damage, owing to the force of impact and potential for the head to directly strike the truck or road surface.
Additionally, spinal injuries and fractures are prevalent among bicyclists involved in collisions with large trucks. The force exerted on the body upon impact can lead to vertebral fractures, spinal cord damage, and paralysis, affecting the cyclist’s mobility and quality of life permanently.
Moreover, severe contusions, lacerations, and soft tissue injuries are frequent, often requiring extensive medical treatment and rehabilitation. The abrasions and lacerations sustained from the collision can be deep and widespread due to contact with the truck’s rough surfaces or the pavement.
