An MTA city bus and a double-decker bus collided in Manhattan the evening of July 13, leaving 80 people injured. According to the New York Post, 27 people were sent to hospitals for treatment of injuries while 50 were treated at the scene. The street intersection accident happened when a double-decker tour bus crashed into the back of an MTA express bus on East 23rd Street and First Avenue in Manhattan, FDNY officials said. An MTA official told the Post that the tour bus appeared to have run a red light before hitting the X27 bus, which was carrying about 20 people on board. Officials said none of the victims suffered life threatening injuries.
Ongoing Bus Accident Investigation
FDNY officials said both buses were “packed” at the time of the bus accident, which led to a high number of passengers being evaluated and treated. Responding units got people off the bus, treated and transported passengers as needed, the news article said. Many of the injuries involved minor cuts, bruises and scrapes. Some victims, however, suffered fractures and head and neck injuries, officials said, adding that it is fortunate the injuries were “not much worse.”
Officials also said the bus with two levels (decks) complicated the rescue efforts as firefighters had to break open windows and use ladders and ropes to get passengers down from the top level. New York City Transit President Richard Davey said the driver of the tour bus sped through a red light and T-boned the MTA bus. He said the tour bus was traveling so fact “it actually hit (the MTA bus) twice.” The tour bus driver was issued a summons, police said. The open-deck bus is operated by a local company, which offers a variety of bus tours around the city. The investigation is ongoing.
What to Do After a Bus Accident
Injured victims should take a number of steps in these types of cases in order to protect their rights. First, it is important they obtain a copy of the police report. Your personal injury lawyer can help you secure a copy of this report, which contains important details such as time, place, location of the incident, the parties involved and often, who was at fault.
It is also important that you get prompt medical care for your injuries. Bus accidents often tend to result in whiplash and other types of neck and back injuries, which might not fully manifest until days after the crash. However, your doctor can promptly determine the type of injury you have sustained and the kind of treatment you will need.
Getting quick medical attention helps establish a record of the type of injuries you have suffered and the treatment you have received or need to receive for those injuries. It is also a good idea to collect as much evidence as possible from the scene of the crash including cell phone photos and videos and contact information for witnesses. It would be in your best interest to immediately contact an experienced New York City bus accident lawyer who will be able to guide you through the claims process, fight for your rights and help you secure maximum compensation for your losses.
Contacting an Experienced Lawyer
Injured victims of bus accidents can seek compensation from at-fault parties for damages including, but not limited to, medical expenses, lost wages and benefits, hospitalization, rehabilitation, permanent injuries, disabilities, past and future pain and suffering, etc. Families that have lost loved ones in car accidents can seek compensation for damages such as lost future income, medical and funeral costs, pain and suffering, etc. Bus companies — whether they are public or private carriers — owe a duty of care to their passengers.
