A major traffic accident involving three tractor-trailers, a tour bus and a passenger vehicle left five people dead and injured at least 60 others on the Pennsylvania Turnpike. According to a CNN report, the crash occurred during the early morning hours on Jan. 5 on the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Mount Pleasant Township southeast of Pittsburgh. The bus was traveling from New York to Cincinnati and was going downhill when it failed to negotiate a corner, went up an embankment and overturned, Pennsylvania State Police officials said.
Injuries and Ongoing Investigation
The overturned bus was also struck by two large trucks, which were then hit by a tractor-trailer. A passenger vehicle, a FedEx truck and UPS truck were all involved. UPS said two drivers, ages 53 and 48, who were driving the large truck, were killed. Around 60 people were transported to local hospitals. Five victims died at the scene. Several children were among those taken to hospitals.
Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) were at the crash site and began looking into what caused the accident. An NTSB board member told CNN that their investigation would focus on roadway design, driver performance, motor carrier compliance and survival factors.
Officials said the speed limit is 70 mph in the area where the crash occurred. The Pennsylvania Turnpike is notorious for collisions involving multiple vehicles. Back in February 2014, 100 vehicles were involved in a major pileup north of Philadelphia that injured at least 30 people. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the injured victims and the families of those who died in this terrible collision.
If You Have Been Injured
If you have been injured in a crash involving commercial or private vehicles, there are a number of steps you should take and ensure that you protect your legal rights and options. Here are some of the measures that victims would be well-advised to take:
• Be sure to file a police report and to obtain a copy of that report for your records. Your New York City car accident lawyer can also help you get this report, which will typically be available a few days after the incident with the law enforcement agency that responded to the collision.
• Obtain as much information as possible from the scene of the crash including photos, videos, statements from eyewitnesses, contact information for other parties including anyone who may have seen the collision occur, etc.
• Secure prompt medical attention, treatment and care for your injuries. This helps document the types of injuries that you sustained as well as the treatment you received.
• Do not agree to a quick settlement with the insurance companies. Promptly contact an experienced New York car accident lawyer who will safeguard your rights every step of the way and help ensure that you get the maximum possible compensation for your losses. Do not talk to or contact any insurance company. Your attorney should do this for you, to protect you.
