Mild Traumatic Brain Injury May Still Cause Permanent Brain Damage

Even a mild traumatic brain injury may cause significant brain damage and long-term issues such as problems with thinking and memory. According to a study published in the July 16 online issue of Neurology, 44 people with mild traumatic brain injuries (TBI) as well as nine people with moderate traumatic brain injuries were compared to 33 people who had not suffered any brain injuries at all. All of the participants were tested on their thinking and memory skills while undergoing a special type of MRI scan that detects damaged brain cells.
Researchers found that the participants with brain injuries had signs of brain damage even after one year. Also, injured patient scores on the verbal letter fluency task, thinking and memory skills were 25 percent lower than the scores of the healthy participants. So far, many studies relating to brain injuries have focused on those with severe traumatic brain injury. This study looked as victims who had suffered so-called mild TBIs from common accidents such as falls from bicycles or slow-speed car accidents. This finding is crucial because the majority – about 90 percent – of all traumatic brain injuries, are considered “mild to moderate.”

Understanding Brain Injuries
According to the Brain Injury Association of America (BIAA), 2.4 million people sustain traumatic brain injuries in the United States each year. The leading causes for brain injuries are falls (35.2 percent); car accidents (17.3 percent); struck by/against events (16.5 percent) and assaults (10 percent).
When a brain injury occurs, the functions of the neurons, nerve tracts or sections of the brain can be affected. If the neurons and nerve tracts are affected, they may lose the ability to carry messages and tell the brain what to do. This can completely change the way a person thinks, acts, feels and moves the body. Brain injury can also change complex internal functions of the body such as regulating temperature, blood pressure, bowel and bladder control. These changes may be temporary or permanent. Often times, people who suffer traumatic brain injuries are left with lifelong impairments or disabilities.
