One person has been killed in a six-car chain reaction accident that occurred the morning of Dec. 29. According to a CBS New York news report, the incident occurred in TriBeCa where police say a 37-year-old man driving a sedan westbound on the West Side Highway lost control and crashed into an SUV near Hubert Street. The impact of the collision caused the SUV to overturn and catch fire, police said.
Driver Arrested and Charged
Investigators say the man continued to drive on and hit a pickup truck, which in turn collided with a sedan. He came to a stop finally, but only after he struck two other vehicles. The driver who caused the initial collision attempted to flee the scene with his dog, but was apprehended shortly thereafter. He was transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
He was charged with manslaughter and leaving the scene of an accident. The driver of the SUV was pronounced dead at the scene. Two other drivers were also rushed to an area hospital, but are said to be in stable condition. The investigation is ongoing. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the deceased victim and the others who were injured.
A number of car accidents in New York City occur because of driver negligence (carelessness). A driver may be negligent in many ways. He or she may be operating a vehicle while impaired or distracted. A moment of inattention might result in a horrific crash. Driving dangerously and aggressively such as making illegal lane changes and passes, blowing through red lights and stop signs, and failing to yield the right of way to vehicles and pedestrians, etc. are all types of negligent acts. Drivers in New York are required to stop and remain at the scene after an injury or fatal car accident. Failing to do so may result in criminal hit-and-run charges.
If You Have Been Injured
Car accidents involving multiple vehicles can be complex at many levels. If you have been injured in such a collision, there are a number of steps you can take to protect your rights. First, make sure you remain at the scene and file a police report. Obtain a copy of this report for your records. Make sure you get prompt medical care and treatment for the injuries that you have sustained in the accident. Gather as much evidence as possible from the accident scene including photos and videos, physical evidence, contact information for eyewitnesses and other parties involved in the accident, etc.
Do not talk to attorneys or insurance companies for other parties before consulting with your attorney. Do not accept any settlement or sign any waivers without talking with your injury lawyer. Also, don’t post any details of the accident including photos and videos on social media. Anything you say or post on social media can be used against you and may potentially jeopardize your claim.
