Woman Suffers Leg Injury in Manhattan Pedestrian Accident

A woman sustained serious leg injuries in a pedestrian accident in Manhattan after a vehicle jumped a curb and pinned her against a light pole. According to a news report in the New York Post, the incident occurred as the woman was walking along Second Avenue near East 49th Street when a silver Mercedes traveling southbound was cut off by another car before coming upon the sidewalk.
Witnesses said the victim’s leg was nearly ripped off. Doctors in a nearby clinic rushed out to help her until paramedics arrived and transported the woman to an area hospital. She was reported to be in serious condition. Police are still investigating this major injury pedestrian accident.

Pedestrian Accident Statistics
The New York City Department of Transportation states that pedestrians are 10 times more likely to be fatally injured than someone who is driving or traveling in a car. Also citywide, pedestrians accounted for 52 percent – more than half – of traffic fatalities from 2005 to 2009. Driver inattention was cited in nearly 36 percent of crashes resulting in fatal or serious injury pedestrian accidents. Also 27 percent of fatal pedestrian accidents involved the driver’s failure to yield.
Leg Injuries
Leg injuries in a pedestrian versus auto accident can range in severity. A pedestrian may escape in some cases with cuts, scrapes or bruises. More serious injuries may include bone fractures. Bones in the leg that are susceptible to breaking in pedestrian accidents include the thighbone, the tibia and fibula, which are bones located just below the knee. In some cases, when the injuries are critical, pedestrians may have to undergo amputation of the leg. So, leg injuries may range from relatively minor to those that have catastrophic consequences for the victim and result in lifelong disabilities.
Compensation for Victims
In these types of cases, injured victims can seek compensation for damages including, but not limited to, medical expenses, lost wages and benefits, hospitalization, rehabilitation, permanent injuries, disabilities, past and future pain and suffering, etc.
