Twelve people were taken to the hospital after a school bus accident on a major street in Stapleton during the rush hour the morning of Dec. 4. According to a report in the Staten Island Advance, the crash involved a yellow school bus with children on board on Targee Street near Roff Street. The front end of a sedan collided with the passenger side of the school bus, FDNY officials said.
Twelve people were transported to an area hospital, but the nature and extent of their injuries was not known. Children were being evaluated at the scene before some were taken away in ambulances, the Staten Island Advance reports. We wish all those injured the very best for a speedy and full recovery.
School bus accidents can occur for a variety of reasons, often involving a combination of factors related to driver behavior, environmental conditions, and issues with the vehicle. The most common causes of school bus accidents include:
In school bus accidents, the types of injuries that can occur depends on the severity of the crash, the safety measures in place, and the individuals involved. Minor injuries often include cuts, bruises, and sprains, which can happen when children are thrown against the interior of the bus or experience sudden jolts. These types of injuries are typically the result of low-impact collisions or abrupt stops. Passengers may also sustain whiplash, which occurs when their heads and necks are jerked forward or backward during the crash.
Moderate injuries may include broken bones, especially in the arms, legs, or ribs. These injuries often happen when passengers are thrown into hard surfaces or if they fall while exiting or entering the bus. For bus drivers, moderate injuries can include fractures or sprains from abrupt movements or being hit by objects inside the bus. Severe injuries are less common but can be life-threatening. These include head trauma, traumatic brain injuries (TBIs), spinal cord injuries and internal organ damage. Head injuries, such as concussions or skull fractures are particularly dangerous and can have long-term effects including cognitive impairment, memory problems, or paralysis. School bus accidents can also, sometimes, result in fatalities. Our law firm recovered one million two hundred and fifty thousand dollars for the victim of a school bus accident.
Injured victims of bus accidents may seek compensation from the bus company and/or other responsible parties for damages including medical expenses, lost wages and benefits, hospitalization, rehabilitation, permanent injuries, disabilities, past and future pain and suffering, etc. Families that have lost loved ones can seek compensation for damages as well by filing a wrongful death claim. Bus accidents have the potential to cause severe or even catastrophic injuries such as traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord trauma, multiple broken bones, internal organ damage, facial and eye injuries, etc.
