Pedestrians Critically Injured in Brooklyn Produce Truck Accident

A man in his 20s was critically injured in a pedestrian accidentin Brooklyn after a produce truck jumped a sidewalk and struck him and another pedestrian. According to news reports, the box truck also rammed into a restaurant façade before slamming into an elevated train column. The 63-year-old male driver may have attempted to flee the scene, police said.

Major Injuries Sustained

The incident occurred the afternoon of May 31 when the refrigerated box truck went out of control and mounted the sidewalk at 86th Street and Bay 34th Street in Gravesend before plowing into the victim and crashing into the restaurant’s façade. The panicked driver then put the truck in reverse striking a 24-year-old woman, police said. The box truck came to a stop when it hit the subway support column.
The male victim was in critical condition with severe body trauma. The woman was said to be in stable condition and had suffered a head injury. Both were transported to an area hospital. The truck is registered with a food wholesaler in East Williamsburg. Police said the driver of the truck is expected to face charges. The authorities are also looking into whether there was a mechanical issue with the truck, news reports said. Our thoughts and prayers are with the injured victims in this accident and we wish them the very best for a quick and full recovery.

Accidents Involving Delivery Trucks

New York City has a number of truck operators who deliver a variety of goods. Accidents involving these types of trucks occur due to a variety of factors. A vast majority of these accidents happen because of truck driver negligence (carelessness) or recklessness. Here are some of the most common causes of delivery trucks accidents:
Excessive speed: Delivery truck drivers are often seen scrambling to get items on time to consumers. Sometimes, they break the speed limit or drive at an unsafe rate of speed just to complete their deliveries or in an effort to keep up with their schedule. A crash that results from any large vehicle such as a delivery truck that is speeding or driving at an unsafe speed definitely has the potential for severe injuries and/or fatalities.
Distracted driving: Delivery truck drivers may when, looking for an address, etc. fail to pay attention to the road. They may be looking at the navigation system, building numbers or other things, which may lead to a vehicle or pedestrian collision.
Carelessness while backing up: Failing to check behind the truck may result in pedestrians or passerby being run over by the truck. When the victims are young children, the consequences may be tragic.
Poor vehicle maintenance: If the delivery vehicle is not properly maintained and is operated with worn-out parts, there is an increased risk for mechanical failure and accidents.
