Ongoing Investigation
Police who responded to the scene found the pedestrian accident victim next to the passenger side back wheel of the truck, about 4 feet from the curb. Emergency personnel rushed the victim, who was unconscious, to the hospital where he is said to be in critical condition. Since the block was virtually empty, few people saw the collision, police said.
Detectives are seeking surveillance camera footage, but many of the stores on the block are closed due to the coronavirus pandemic. The driver of the postal truck was tested for alcohol consumption, but has not been charged with any crime yet. The NYPD Collision Investigation Squad is looking into this case. • Yield the right of way to pedestrians. New York law requires drivers to come to a full stop at a crosswalk and yield the right of way. Drivers are required to exercise due care and look for pedestrians even when they are not in marked crosswalks. It’s important that drivers continue to monitor pedestrian traffic and stop when required to do so.
