Pedestrian Critically Injured in Manhattan by USPS Truck

A 59-year-old man is in critical condition after he was struck by a U.S. Postal Service truck on a Manhattan street. According to an AMNY news report, the incident occurred the morning of May 10 near 46 West 14th Street between Fifth and Sixth avenues. Witnesses said the driver of the postal truck was traveling east on West 14th Street when he hit the man.

Ongoing Investigation

Police who responded to the scene found the pedestrian accident victim next to the passenger side back wheel of the truck, about 4 feet from the curb. Emergency personnel rushed the victim, who was unconscious, to the hospital where he is said to be in critical condition. Since the block was virtually empty, few people saw the collision, police said.

Detectives are seeking surveillance camera footage, but many of the stores on the block are closed due to the coronavirus pandemic. The driver of the postal truck was tested for alcohol consumption, but has not been charged with any crime yet. The NYPD Collision Investigation Squad is looking into this case. Our thoughts and prayers are with the injured victim.

Tips for Drivers During COVID-19

While traffic accidents are generally declining nationwide, reports have shown that injuries and fatalities particularly in New York City have not gone down. We’ve also seen reports of more drivers speeding on roadways that have been emptied out because of COVID-19 shutdowns. Here are a few tips for drivers that should help them avoid pedestrian and other types of accidents:

• Slow down. Even though the streets may be wide open, it is important to stick to the speed limit and drive at a speed that is safe for the conditions. Studies also show that pedestrians tend to suffer far more serious injuries when they are struck at a higher speed. So, it is critical that drivers slow down on city streets where pedestrian traffic is greater.
• Don’t drive distracted. Put that phone away when you get behind the wheel. Avoid all types of distractions. Manual distractions are those where you move your hands from the wheel. Visual distractions are those where you take your eyes away from the road, and cognitive distractions include those that cause your mind and attention to be diverted from the task of driving.
• Yield the right of way to pedestrians. New York law requires drivers to come to a full stop at a crosswalk and yield the right of way. Drivers are required to exercise due care and look for pedestrians even when they are not in marked crosswalks. It’s important that drivers continue to monitor pedestrian traffic and stop when required to do so.
