One Killed after Coca-Cola Delivery Truck Hits Bronx Building

A 37-year-old woman was killed and six other people were injured after a Coca-Cola delivery truck collided with an SUV and crashed into an apartment building in the South Bronx. According to a report in The New York Times, the fatal crash occurred when the delivery truck lost control and ran onto a sidewalk, before slamming into the victim and crashing into scaffolding on the building at 759 East 138th Street in the Port Morris neighborhood.

Ongoing Traffic Issues
The victim and two other people were struck while waiting at a bus stop. The woman died at the scene. The truck driver and five others suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to area hospitals. Police say the chain of events started on Bruckner Boulevard when a 52-year-old woman driving an SUV crossed two lanes and cut in front of the delivery truck to make a right turn.
The truck hit the car before losing control and going into the building. The crash shook the six-story brick building and damaged the attached scaffolding. Tenants in the building had apparently complained that the road was dangerous and had asked for a traffic control device. One neighbor said he and a friend were almost hit by a car several weeks ago as they were walking back to their apartment. Other long-time neighbors said Bruckner Boulevard had long been a dangerous place to cross because traffic lights at the intersection frequently malfunction or stop working completely. The intersection is also dangerous for pedestrians, neighbors said.
Accident Investigation
In any car accident case such as this, it is important to look into how or why the collision occurred and who caused it. It is necessary for a thorough investigation to be promptly conducted and to examine the causes as well as contributing factors for the incident. Was one of the drivers impaired, distracted or inattentive? Was excessive speed a factor in the collision? Did a dangerous roadway or intersection play a role in the incident? Did any of the drivers involved violate the rules of the road such as running a stop sign or red light, making an unsafe turn or lane change, failing to yield the right-of-way, etc?
It often takes experienced accident reconstruction experts to piece together information from the accident scene in order to pin down the cause of a collision. In such cases, the at-fault parties can be held liable for the injuries, damages and losses caused. In some cases where the driver is on the job, his or her employer may also be held liable. Victims can file a civil personal injury claim even if no one has been arrested or cited in connection with the incident.
