New York City’s 10 Most Dangerous Intersections

Mayor Bill de Blasio’s ambitious Vision Zero program aims to eliminate traffic accident deaths by 2024. Although this may seem to be a formidable task, the numbers are certainly heading in the right direction, according to a report in the Gothamist. In 2015, there were 233 traffic deaths compared to 269 the previous year. Commissioner Bill Bratton is also pushing for about 500 additional traffic enforcement agents.

Mapping the Worst Intersections
Aleksey Bilogur, a mathematics student at CUNY Baruch College has taken data from New York City’s motor vehicle collision dataset to map out the worst intersections in the city. The interactive map he created is based on his analysis of the data and attempts to identify the traffic accident hotspots in the city.
Bilogur used information collected by the city between July 1, 2012 and March 14, 2016 to create the map. Bilogur found that the worst traffic intersections tend to be those near on- and off-ramps of major bridges and tunnels. Other dangerous intersections are located on the Manhattan side of the Queensboro Bridge and the intersection of Bowery and Delancey streets where cars from the Manhattan and Williamsburg Bridge off-ramps seem to crash.

Common Street Intersection Accidents
Here are some of the most common types of car accidents that may occur at street intersections:
• Pedestrian accidents
• Broadside or T-bone crashes
• Head-on collisions
• Rear-end collisions
• Collisions between vehicles and bicycles
• Motorcycle accidents
There are a number of reasons why these types of accidents occur at street intersections ranging from inattention and negligence to wrongdoing on the part of drivers. Some drivers choose to operate their vehicles under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. Others might be distracted by cellphones while driving. Often, we see accidents occur at street intersections when vehicles are attempting to make left turns or U-turns. In such cases, drivers are often required to yield the right of way to oncoming vehicles.
When they fail to do that, the consequences can be devastating. Also, a common cause of pedestrian accidents at street intersections is drivers failing to yield the right of way to pedestrians walking in crosswalks. New York law requires motorists to come to a complete stop at crosswalks and yield the right of way to pedestrians. Another common cause of street intersection accidents is blowing through red lights or stop signs.
