Manhole Explosion in Tribeca Injures Three People

Two young children and a woman were injured in Lower Manhattan the afternoon of Feb. 26 after a manhole cover blew off the street, city officials said. According to a Gothamist news report, police said they responded to the incident near the intersection of Warren and Church streets in Tribeca. A 4-year-old boy, a 2-year-old girl and a 57-year-old woman had all sustained various burn injuries, officials said. They were all taken to New York-Presbyterian Lower Manhattan Hospital in stable condition.

FDNY officials said the incident was one of three blown manhole covers in the area around the same time. Experts told Gothamist that manhole explosions occur more commonly in the winter when snowmelt mixed with abrasive road salt can damage old wiring and aging infrastructure, leading to combustion in some cases. The blasts often result in injuries, fires, property damage and the release of toxic gases such as carbon monoxide. City and Con Edison officials have not commented on the causes of the Tribeca manhole explosion, Gothamist reports.

Burn Injuries Caused by Manhole Explosions

Manhole explosions can cause severe and life-threatening burn injuries. These explosions are often linked to underground electrical fires, gas buildup or utility infrastructure that are in poor condition. When gases such as methane accumulate in confined sewer or utility vaults and ignite — sometimes triggered by a spark from damaged wiring — the resulting blast can send flames, debris and superheated air shooting into the street. Pedestrians, construction workers and nearby motorists can potentially suffer serious burns within seconds.

Burn injuries from manhole explosions typically include first-, second-, and third-degree burns. First-degree burns damage the outer layer of skin, causing redness and pain. Second-degree burns penetrate deeper, leading to blistering, swelling and intense discomfort. Third-degree burns are the most severe, destroying multiple layers of skin and sometimes underlying tissue, nerves and muscle.

Victims may also experience inhalation injuries if they breathe in hot gases or smoke, which can damage the airway and lungs. Treatment often requires emergency care, skin grafts, surgery and long-term rehabilitation. Beyond physical harm, survivors may face permanent scarring, nerve damage and even psychological trauma from the sudden, violent nature of the explosion.

Liability Issues

In New York City, liability for a manhole explosion injury depends on who was responsible for maintaining the underground utility system. Often, the primary party is the local utility company, such as Con Edison, which operates and maintains much of the city’s electrical infrastructure. If the explosion resulted from faulty wiring, poor maintenance or failure to inspect known hazards, the utility provider may be held liable for negligence (carelessness).

Property owners/managers can also be responsible if the manhole or underground equipment is located on or connected to private property and they failed to address hazardous conditions. Contractors or construction companies may share liability if their excavation or repair work damaged utility lines or created unsafe conditions. In some cases, a government entity could be liable if improper permitting, inspections or oversight contributed to the explosion. Determining liability typically requires a thorough investigation to identify whether negligence (carelessness), code violations or failure to follow safety regulations caused the incident.
