FDA Issues Warning about Potentially Contaminated Protein Bars

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a warning to consumers asking them not to eat certain ProtiDiet High Protein Chocolate Dream Bars manufactured by Pro-Amino International Inc., a company that is based in Quebec, Canada. According to the FDA’s website, certain batches of the protein bars may be contaminated with salmonella bacteria. These recalled products have been distributed in a number of states including New York.
Consumers are asked not to eat these bars and either discard them or return them to the store. FDA officials say the bars may contain salmonella bacteria. The product is the ProtiDiet High Protein Chocolate Dream Bar, sold in 7.4-ounce packages, seven bars per package, bearing UPC 6 21498 42238 1, lot code CR 18 13B, and a “Best Before” date of 2015-08. So far, no illnesses have been reported as a result of these products.
Salmonella Poisoning
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) states that in 2008, 1,034 food poisoning outbreaks were reported. During these outbreaks, 22 died and 23,000 people became ill. Almost half of these outbreaks had a single cause or food source, according to the CDC report. In addition, more than 1,200 people were hospitalized because of food poisoning in 2008, the report states. Nearly 62 percent of these hospitalizations were due to salmonella infections. Some of the common salmonella symptoms include fever, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and painful stomach cramping. Young children, the elderly and those with compromised immune systems are more vulnerable to these types of infections.
