Bronx Teacher Charged with Raping 10-year-old Student

An elementary school teacher in the Bronx has been charged with raping one of his young students. The 40-year-old teacher, Anthony Criscuolo, was ordered to hand over all travel documents. According to a CBS New York report, Criscuolo was arrested on charges of first-degree rape, predatory sexual assault against a child, attempted rape and endangering the welfare of the child. The alleged victim is one of the teacher’s fifth grade students at a Fordham Heights school.
Several Incidents of Sexual Assault
Officials said the teacher had been sexually abusing the 10-year-old girl for at least two months. The first incident occurred in April when he sexually assaulted the girl in school and the second incident happened a month later when the man allegedly told the girl he was doing this to her because he “liked” her. The most recent attack occurred last month when investigators said he lured the girl into a car in the school’s parking lot and raped her, according to the criminal complaint.
The child’s mother called police after discovering explicit emails sent by the teacher to the girl. The teacher has apparently worked three different elementary schools in the city – two of them in the Bronx. He has now been reassigned to a non-teaching position and has been banned from the school. The department is also seeking to fire him. It is not known at this time if there were additional victims.
Liability in Sexual Abuse Cases
Schools are responsible for providing security and protection to students. Young children are vulnerable because they cannot protect themselves against adults. It is the job of the school and the education department to ensure that children have a safe and clean environment where they can learn and grow. In such cases, a number of questions must be asked. How did these incidents occur at school without anyone knowing? What type of security does the campus have? Did any of the school’s administrators have knowledge of these incidents?
Victims of sexual assault and sexual abuse and their families can seek compensation for their losses including, but not limited to, medical expenses, cost of counseling, permanent injuries, past and future pain and suffering, etc. Sexual abuse, regardless of age, can leave deep emotional and psychological scars.
