So far, very little is known about what health risks Roundup poses for human beings. Once the plants absorb the chemical, it gets into the weeds and shuts down their growth. In 2015, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced that glyphosate is “probably carcinogenic” to humans. Despite the widespread use of glyphosate and the controversy regarding the chemical, the extent of research about its effect on the human body is quite limited.
Last year, one study, which looked at six previous studies about glyphosate, determined that exposure to this herbicide did make people more susceptible to cancer. They also determined that the more pesticide people were exposed to, the higher the risk. While many of these studies focused on agriculture workers, there is hardly any independent research that has assessed the health risks to the general population or people who come into contact with glyphosate products, especially through food consumption.
For example, grocery shoppers may have seasonal exposures to the chemical during periods when they are consuming fruits and vegetables. Researchers agree that there is a requirement for more studies to be done here. Most of the research relating to human health and glyphosate has focused on non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, which is a cancer that originates in the white blood cells. Researchers are calling for a study that will explore the connections between glyphosate and all types of cancers.
