AAA Study Shows Rise in New York Pedestrian Deaths

A new study by AAA Northeast shows that one pedestrian was struck by a motorist every 33 minutes in New York State with nearly 162,000 people killed or injured in pedestrian accidents between 2010 and 2019. According to a report in Newsday, the latest data highlights a worrying trend and indicates that the progress that was made in 2015 is being reversed.

In 2013, injuries and/or fatalities from such accidents were at its highest, involving 16,145 people. While that count was brought down by 22% in 2015, it has now crept up again to 15,456 in 2019. That amounts to a 15% spike over the 2015 numbers.

What the Report States

The data casts the spotlight on Suffolk County, which is both rural and extremely congested. The death toll in the county during the period studied was 400, the highest for any county in the state. That’s four people more than in Brooklyn at 396 and more than in Queens at 387. Suffolk is also the largest county in New York State with the fourth highest population and home to the most registered vehicles, officials stated. Nassau ranked fourth here followed by Manhattan, the Bronx, Erie, Monroe, Westchester and Staten Island.

The AAA analysis also the highlighted the twin hazards of driving at dusk and being a senior. The most dangerous time of day was 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. with schools letting out and during the evening rush. The second deadliest time of day was 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The top causes of vehicle versus pedestrian collisions were driver inattention and failure to yield the right of way to the pedestrian, the study found.

Negligence (carelessness) and Pedestrian Accidents

New York laws state that pedestrians have the right of way in all crosswalks and intersections with marked or unmarked crosswalks. The law also states that motorists turning right or left at an intersection should always look for pedestrians and yield the right of way to them. Pedestrians have the right of way at intersections, even if drivers have a green light.

Some of the deadliest pedestrian accidents occur in crosswalks and at street intersections and these are collisions often caused by driver negligence (carelessness), as the AAA report points out. Failure to yield the right of way to pedestrians is one of the most common causes of vehicle versus pedestrian accidents in crosswalks and at street intersections. Driver impairment, inattention and/or distraction are other possible factors in such major injury or fatal pedestrian accidents.
