Sixteen people were injured when a bus and a car collided on Manhattan Bridge late morning on March 6. According to a report in the New York Post, the bus accident occurred on the lower level of the span’s Manhattan-bound lane. FDNY said one person was taken to Bellevue Hospital with serious injuries and four others were brought there with other non-life-threatening injuries. One other person was transported to NYU Langone-Tisch Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Ten more victims were evaluated by emergency personnel at the scene. The most serious injury was a possible broken leg while another person appeared to have suffered a concussion, police said. The impact also left one of the drivers with back and body pain, officials said. The cause of the crash and type of bus involved is not known. Our thoughts and prayers are with all those who were injured in this crash and we wish them the very best for a speedy and complete recovery. The investigation into the cause of this bus accident is still ongoing.
Bus accidents can cause a wide range of injuries because passengers are often unrestrained and the size of the vehicle can lead to severe impact. One of the most common injuries is whiplash, which occurs when the neck suddenly snaps back and forth. This can cause long-term neck pain, headaches and limited mobility. Head injuries, including concussions and traumatic brain injuries, are also common and may lead to memory problems, dizziness or lasting cognitive difficulties.
Passengers may also suffer broken bones, particularly in the arms, legs, ribs or hips. These injuries can require surgery and months of rehabilitation. Spinal cord injuries are among the most serious, sometimes resulting in partial or complete paralysis and permanent lifestyle changes. Additionally, soft tissue injuries such as sprains and torn ligaments can cause chronic pain and reduced movement. Recovery from these injuries sustained in bus accidents can be challenging because they often involve lengthy medical treatment, physical therapy, emotional stress and significant disruptions to daily life.
If you have been injured in a bus accident, taking the following steps immediately afterward can protect your health and your legal rights. First, seek medical attention as soon as possible, even if you don’t immediately believe you’ve been seriously injured. Some injuries such as concussions or internal damage, may not show symptoms right away but can worsen without treatment.
Next, report the accident to the appropriate authorities and make sure an official report is filed. If possible, collect information at the scene, including the bus company’s name, the driver’s details, and contact information from any witnesses. Taking photos or videos of the accident scene, the bus and your injuries can also serve as valuable evidence later. Your bus accident lawyer can help you collect evidence and document the accident scene as well.
It is also important to keep records of everything related to the accident. Save medical bills, prescriptions, treatment plans and any documentation showing missed work or other financial losses caused by the injury. You should also avoid discussing fault or giving detailed statements to insurance companies before understanding your rights. Insurance adjusters may attempt to minimize compensation.
