Construction AccidentThree construction workers were injured at a new high school construction site after two of them slipped and fell off the roof. According to a news report, the construction accident occurred at the Massachusetts school when one worker was on the roof fastening his safety harness. Fire officials say he slid off the roof and took a second worker with him. They fell onto a third worker who was on the ground. All three were transported to a local hospital with broken bones. Their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening. OSHA is investigating the incident.
Falls are the most common cause of serious injuries and fatalities on construction sites. According to OSHA’s website, identifying fall hazards and deciding how best to equip and protect workers is the first step to reducing or eliminating such accidents. The U.S. Department of Labor lists falls as one of the leading causes of workplace accidents accounting for 8 percent of all occupational fatalities.
According to federal law, any time a worker is at a height of 4 feet or more, he or she is at risk and must be protected. Fall protection is required at 4 feet in general industry, 5 feet in maritime and 6 feet in construction. Fall protection must be provided regardless of the height if the worker is operating over dangerous equipment and machinery.
When a fall accident occurs, it is important to establish whether the employer had in fact provided a safe working environment, if safeguards were in place, and whether the workers had received the necessary safety training to perform the job. Such on-the-job accidents often result in serious injuries such as brain injuries, spinal cord damage, broken bones, and even back and neck injuries.
