World Trade Center Construction Site A 37-year-old construction worker was injured after falling and impaling himself on a piece of metal at 4 World Trade Center. According to a report in the Long Island Press, the construction accident occurred just one day after the project was completed. The man was working to help build a skyscraper at 150 Greenwich St. Officials said he slipped and fell about 5 feet. The man suffered a puncture wound in his side. He was taken to a local hospital and is expected to survive in spite of suffering critical injuries.
A spokesman for the construction company said the worker landed on a steel rod he was carrying. Just one day before the incident, officials celebrated the laying of the final steel beam at 4 World Trade Center. There have been several incidents at this worksite including one where a teenager was injured in May when a steel rod fell from the 13th floor. Another accident at the construction site involved a load of steel beams that fell about 40 feet and injured workers.
NY Construction Accidents
According to the New York City Department of Buildings, there were 128 construction accidents in 2011 and 152 construction accident-related injuries. There are many hazards at worksites that could lead to a variety of accidents involving equipment malfunctions, electrocution, falling objects, etc.
Of all the potential risks and hazards at a construction site, falls remain the most common type of accident in the United States. Employers are responsible for making sure that their workplace is safe for all employees. They must provide their employees with the proper safety gear while they are on the job. Supervisors should routinely survey the worksite to make sure that workers follow applicable safety standards. Employers, general contractors and building owners must ensure that the building meets all OSHA standards through each stage of construction.
Workers’ Compensation Issues
Victims of construction accidents may seek compensation for their medical bills and a portion of their lost wages by filing for workers’ compensation benefits. In cases involving third-party negligence, additional compensation may be available through civil litigation. Insurance companies and employers commonly deny claims, forcing injured workers to fight for the compensation they need.
