Staten Island Construction AccidentA 58-year-old worker who was injured at a Staten Island construction accident, has filed a lawsuit seeking compensation for his injuries. According to a news report in The Staten Island Advance, the man suffered leg and arm injuries when he fell down a shaft at the new St. George courthouse worksite. The contractor who hired him for the job is not one of the 10 listed defendants in his claim, but the city, State Dormitory Authority and various other parties are named. He believes that their negligence directly led to his injuries.
The worker was performing ventilating, air conditioning and heating work at the site when fell down the elevator shaft onto ductwork, which prevented him from plummeting to the bottom. He suffered severe injuries to his legs and arms requiring surgery and has still not been able to return to work. The victim stated that if the workplace was safer, and if he were provided with the necessary safety devices, he would not have been injured.

Workplace Safety
Falls are one of the leading causes of work-related deaths at construction sites and according to the United States Department of Labor, falls account for a third of all construction-related deaths. There were at least 442 fall-related construction worker fatalities in the year 2007 alone.
Under state and federal laws, employers are required to ensure that workplaces are safe and that workers are provided with the equipment they need to do their jobs safely. This includes ensuring that fall safety devices such as harnesses are provided, safety nets are installed, scaffoldings are secured and safe work practices are enforced. It is also necessary to train workers on safety procedures and accident prevention methods.
