Slip and Fall AccidentA woman is suing Home Depot after she says she slipped and fell at the store two years ago. According to The Madison Record, the woman says that she was in Home Depot when she slipped and fell on what seemed to be a watery substance spilled on the floor. The woman says employees did not warn customers of the danger. She sustained external and internal injuries but her lawsuit did not say what specific injuries she suffered. She is asking for more than $50,000 to cover medical costs and other expenses.
Fall-Related Injuries
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), falls are the most common injury-causing events after car accidents in the nation. The federal agency reports that more than 17,000 people die each year as a result of slip-and-fall injuries or trip-and-fall injuries. Slip-and-fall injuries have the potential to be serious and life changing. About one third of those who suffer slip-and-fall accidents suffer injuries such as broken bones, bruises and head injuries.
Duty of Property Owners and Businesses
A liquid spill on a shop floor is probably one of the most common causes of slip-and-fall accidents. Maintaining the premises and keeping it safe for customers is the responsibility of any business or establishment. This includes making customers aware of any spills by placing warning signs, and cleaning up the spills quickly. Supervisors must immediately fix the situation and put up “slippery floor” signs to warn anyone who may be walking near the dangerous location.
Compensation for Injured Victims
Injuries suffered in a slip-and-fall accidents can range from minor to serious. Herniated discs, traumatic head injuries, broken bones and internal bleeding are examples of some of the injuries suffered by victims of these types of accidents. If you were involved in a slip-and-fall or a trip-and-fall accident as a result of someone else’s negligence, please remember that you have rights. Some of the damages that victims of such accidents can claim include, but are not limited to, medical expenses, loss of wages and benefits, cost of hospitalization, surgery, physical therapy, past and future pain and suffering, permanent injury damages, etc.
