First Woman President Elected in South Korea

South Koreans have made history by electing their first woman president, Park Geun-hye, a conservative lawmaker and daughter of the general who ruled the country in the 1960s and 1970s. According to a news report in The Wall Street Journal, Park defeated Moon Jae-in. Park stated in interviews following her victory that “the people of South Korea want to see a revival of their economy” and that she will be a president who cares about the people. Park became the first candidate to win a majority of the vote since South Korea began democratic elections in 1987.
Voters endured one of the coldest winter days to choose their new president with a 75.8 percent turnout, the highest in the last three presidential elections in that country. She will take office in February for a single five-year term. Other countries that have had female leaders in the past include Canada, New Zealand, Chile, Israel, Norway, Turkey and the United Kingdom.
Park’s election should reduce the likelihood of friction between South Korea and the United States, experts say. The earlier administration’s proposal to provide unfettered economic assistance to North Korea “clashed with Washington’s desire to focus on Pyongyang’s pursuit of nuclear weapons,” the Journal reports. Park, 60, is the daughter of Park Chung-hee, the general who seized control of South Korea in a military coup in 1961 and changed the constitution twice in the 1970s to stay in power.
This is indeed a historic and proud moment for the people of South Korea and for the South Korean community all over the world. We wish the nation of South Korea and its president the very best.
